    I'm sure everyone is familiar with the 1978 Rule Book and subsequent revisions including the 1983 abridged version which was withdrawn a year later owing to a series of errors in the Chaucer Gambit (advanced style), but I was wondering if anyone has ever seen an actual copy of the Edinburgh Rules, rather than it being passed on only by word of mouth?

    Anyone like to join me in a lighthearted invoking of said Rules as pertaining to north, east, south and west Edinburgh? We can play Active Moves only, and remember, no circumventions using the M8 are allowed during Festival time.

    A nice easy move to start things off: Pinkhill.

    Hmm, since according to the Wester Hailes variation of 1952 (v2), one may not cross the path of the number 22 bus at the weekend I'm going to say...Gorgie Road.

    So long as one is still allowed to play the pre-1965 Caledonian Mainline ordinance, then;

    Pinkhill - Gorgie Road - Hermand Crescent - Merchiston Station

    Hmm, that's a crafty lateral positioning, kaputnik. But it leaves the southeast quadrant for exploitation under the Suburban Deflection rule. If we're allowing for realignments, then:

    Pinkhill - Gorgie Road - Hermand Crescent - Merchiston Station - Mayfield Gardens

    Hah!

  6. Oh come on, how can you all have forgotten the Connery Gambit? As I'm sure you're aware this allows for the bringing into play of former station sites on the suburban rail network, and I'm going to double this up with the Straddle Principle of Long Streets, and play...

    Pinkhill - Gorgie Road - Hermand Crescent - Merchiston Station - Mayfield Gardens - Ferry Road

    I miss this particular program now the series has finished but I can honestly say I do not understand how to play the game... :-(

    I think the Edinburgh rules are more straightforward, especially since volume 36 was revoked completely as a mark of respect towards its editor, Lord Hamish Featheringstonehaugh-Smythe after he choked to death on a marmite sandwich.

    With that in mind, I am going to call MacDonald's Hen Party Axiom and go..

    Pinkhill - Gorgie Road - Hermand Crescent - Merchiston Station - Mayfield Gardens - Ferry Road- Grassmarket

    not at all, I think if you look under Appendix xvii you will see it allows for the following manoeuvre;

    Pinkhill - Gorgie Road - Hermand Crescent - Merchiston Station - Mayfield Gardens - Ferry Road- Grassmarket - Nassau

    Who is refereeing this?

    Isn't it supposed to be just Ed?

    If not surely Grassmarket - Nassau is disqualified for inappropriate confusion of Gm and Fb??

    Yes one might think that, but it clearly states - as mentioned above - in Appx. xvii. of the Connery Gambit that one can make a single move jump to any location within the Bahamas so long as the following destination is within the delivery radius of St. Cuthberts dairy and one avoids paying UK taxes.

    Nassau should be permitted, but only if followed by Regents Terrace, however first you have to over come the Tory blocking move...

    I think you'll find that Appx. xvii subsection (b) of the Connery Gambit makes provision for blocking move exemptions if the date is odd. Since that produces a 23 for today, I'm at liberty to not play Regent Terrace. I would have gone for Balgreen for mainline possibilities, but that's now out of bounds due to tram works, so I must defer and instead play:

    Pinkhill - Gorgie Road - Hermand Crescent - Merchiston Station - Mayfield Gardens - Ferry Road- Grassmarket - Nassau - Haymarket Depot.

    Oh dash! the platform gate is locked! Broken windae - thaut's handy? In we go! Ye'll've haud yer tea then?

    I'll hauve tae wait till the Gascoine Flange move comes up then...

    Oh come along, chaps, play fair! Even in Lord Hamish's revoked copy the reader was directed to 'Fundamentals of Play: Gallantry and Decorum for Gentlemen'. I hope you didn't tear out those pages from your copies of the rules. My 1978 copy is a bit tattered, I'll grant you, and has that awful red and black tartan fabric cover, but the sections are much the same. I prefer the earlier editions, myself; can't be doing with that sloppy 'Basic rules: Be a Sport' heading.

    So, I could play Hardwell Close, but won't. :-p

    Instead, I think you'll find that by playing Eyre and Bellvue you're rather neatly blocked from northwards progression.

    Are bollards permissible in a chukka which has already included rail halts? I thought that sort of thing had been disallowed after that infamous '57 incident, if I remember rightly it concerned a rather unsporting play on Clapham Junction.
    Perhaps one of the more experienced players could adjudicate?

    You're right, Smudge. We don't like to talk about The Clapham Incident, after the way it nearly destroyed the Battersea and Wandsworth Depots League. Bollards are only allowed if the nearest east-west bus route is held available for play.

    Kaputnik, that was a bold move, but I'll allow it.

    Interesting. Being born and raised south of the border, I've never played the sixteen-man code before. Of course, because the Thames is much narrower than the Forth, the whole concept of using headport parameters and gulley switching is really off my radar - we always tended to stick to Northern Line protocols instead. However, if I may be permitted to join in, can I offer : Dumbiedykes Road.

    I appreciate that may not be entirely acceptable under local rules, but hopefully I haven't offended anyone with the move.

    Dumbiedykes, of course! How did I miss such an elementary move?

    I've no option but to play Brown Street now.

    Working on the premise its good to do all the climbs at the start of your turn I've rolled an assist and gone Kaimes road the hard eay. I two more turns and a banana should put me on Clermiston. Now just hope I can roll a banana.
