    Went down before ten as website said opened at ten. Now opens at nine. Stowed with bargain hunting cyclists. Bought oil pen and gunk puncture thing. Tried on the rain cape, was extremely boiling. I have two already in dirty white and clean white, talked myself out of the purchase though in black and better cut as longer (due to the white ones being for the ladies). Did buy their Albariño for £5.99 and their cartons of fresh orange juice as you get six for same price and identical product cf Tesco. Checkout person told me someone spent £200 on the bike stuff.

    No gilets so either someone bought them all before ten or they didn't get them in.

    There were still plenty gilets at the wee Aldi on Gorgie Road at 2pm. Picked one up and a pair of the sunglasses. Gilet seems to be pretty much the same as my Castelli one, on which the zip had broken, only £40 cheaper.

    That was the Aldi I was at, but I wasn't seeking a gilet as I have one (bit big but not enough to have to buy another). Chap I met said he couldn't see any and indeed there seemed to be a space. Maybe they found them and put them out. My gilet decathlon, sixteen quid but often decathlon stuff as cheap as Aldi.

    The puncture gunk is meant to go out with you on your cycle. I came a cropper like that before. Green slime all over the inside of my ortlieb.

    Had a look at Aldi's offerings. The set of LED lights looks a decent deal at £6.99 but the front light is secured to the handlebars by a rubber strip that will perish and break - so beware.

    On the other hand, Altenmunster Beer is very nice.

    I might look to pick up a pair of their shoes, the brown ones. Past purchases have been solid, well-made affairs. Not light, but then they'd be winter commuting shoes, sparing my regular SPDs the torture.

    I bought a pair at the last sale. The sole plate broke last week, leaving a cleat stuck in the pedal which took a bit of effort to then remove. They were only £20 so I'm not too disappointed though as they had been used every day for commuting.

    My source tells me that Aldi on Gorgie Rd was a bit of a scrum this morning.

    I was there at 8.20am one person on till but only shoppers were buying bike gear.

    some of their kit is actually quite good quality. Not as dirt cheap as LIDL or indeed previous aldi

    unlike in other shops the shoppers tend to have no regard for propriety and just pull the stuff out to have a look then chuck it back.

    Reminds me of a story a joiner told me - he was selling the cut outs from working surfaces where the sink goes as chopping blocks. I have one I paid 4 quid for has lasted years. He was selling them to raise money for the Gala. No one bought them at 2 pounds. He sold the lot at 4 pounds.

    So I bought what looks like a sixty quid pair of biblongs for £29.99. And a pair of sealskin water proof socks copies for half price. Unlike previous years I did no pulling out of items and had researched what I was after from this very forum.

    Note Williams Bros beer £1.49 and what will be a fifteen quid red wine elsewhere (Gigondas) £9.99 - would still like tasting notes before paying that but tempting for the winter in front of the fire.

    I didn't bother with the scrum this morning as all the winter gear I bought at last year's Aldi sale is still going strong, even with a full winter of commuting in it every day. The quality is just as good as anything you'll get in Evans or EBC.

    They also sell the excellent Thistly Cross cider cheaper than anywhere else for those with a more "fruit-based" palate. (I'm a fan of Williams Bros myself)

  16. Got a winter cycling jacket and leg warmers which both look decent enough, but they had none of the merino base layers left in my size (this was in Livi store).

    lots left at Duloch- though XL is borderline too small for me...

    MRSRD was looking for the jacket (full length zip) in XL, but Gorgie didn't seem to have any. The long-sleeve jerseys look like they might fill the same niche though.

    I got a 9.99 long sleeve jersey (luminous yellow) and used it this am.
    XL seems a better fit in that. But sizes are irregular- the performance jerseys didn't come down past my belly button. Must be different manufacturers.

    Odd. Both the XL performance jerseys we got seemed quite long - MRSRD is long through the torso and they're okay on him.

    The morning has annoyed me enough (and stolen my lunch-time sufficiently) to make me inclined to leave as soon as I can after four, so I shall trundle first past Gorgie and thence to Musselburgh, if they're selling long-sleeved brightly-coloured things. All my high-albedo things are short-sleeved at the moment.

    @paddyirish

    the performance top is cut high for some reason? seem to be wanting you to pair it with the biblongs. I bought these. Went for large as noted sizes were only medium large or X-l but maybe medium would have been ok as they have a bit of room - they are good for £29.99 if a little thin compared with my dear ones from Gore. Quality way better than their normal which is already better than LIDL. waterproof socks, wool 29% socks and normal nylon socks all good quality.

    @Wingpig - if you luck out in the Honest Toun, you could always try the Aldi in Haddington. Last time I was passing by a few weeks back they had a swathe of clearance items, including a pile of cycling shoes, arm/leg warmers, etc.

    @gembo

    Agreed, but it is a reason that makes it pointless for me- I have bought the bib longs but I wouldn't fancy only having a bit of mesh to cover my midriff. They'll suit someone with a shorter back and a smaller gut than I...

    It's the not so mellow yellow for me...

    @paddyirish, the bib longs this year in the 'pro' range have an abnormally high waist as far as bib longs go. This in. No way excuses the ludicrously high cut top. In the same range.

    Just been in Aldi Musselburgh - heaps (literally...) of everything except waterproof socks, some sizes of bib-longs and the men's merino baselayer (although there were a handful of these left).

    Livingston seems to have a good range from jackets, to shoes to tool kits to trousers. I was there yesterday but did just end up buying some cheap booze and things. May get the tool kit but as just started cycling 3 months ago not quite sure I need any specific clothing as such.

    @ed1 depends if you fancy commuting every day. Also on how wet you can be on arrival at work. If going daily and wet not option then maybe waterproof trousers .- the Aldi sale might have had them?
