POLICE and health chiefs have joined forces to blast a council decision to green light two new off-sales in the same street – amid fears it will fuel violence and antisocial behaviour.

Supermarket giants Sainsbury’s and Co-op applied to sell booze from stores due to open in Earl Grey Street, Tollcross.

Incredibly, even that article attracts and anti-cyclist comment!:

    ""The police were.......blatantly ignored"!
Interesting to see that both the police and the NHS are now discovering that the only people Councillors listen to these days are the two-wheeled lycra-clad loonies!

Well I can't say I'm convinced by the police and NHS view of quantity vs quality on licensing in tollcross - its stated that the area is a problem or concern area for booze and the 'night time economy' but who believes that police callouts would not be vastly reduced by closing the cavendish nightclub?
I used to regularly pass it on the way home of an evening and there was usually a police van herding the clientele..

"A Co-op Food Store is located in Leven Street along with a Scottish Co-op in Lothian Road"

Actually, they're both Scotmids and there's no such thing as "Scottish Co-op". Of course you couldn't expect Edinburgh's "local paper" to have that sort of inside scoop about a supermarket that has been there since St. Cuthbert's days at least.

A ROW between the police and Edinburgh City Council over the growing number of pubs and off-sales flooding the Capital has intensified – after the licensing chief rejected links between the spread of alcohol sales and public disorder.

On the subject of Lothian Road boozeries, it seems to have all gone quiet on the Picturehouse/Wetherspoons front. No sign of a planning application for change of use yet as far as I can tell.

    Anyone heard anything?
