So, I need some bits and bobs for the helmetcam. Advice?

First, a bit that I don't know the name of:

I need another one of these for my handlebar mount.

Second: if I want a bigger memory card, can someone tell me the right name of what I need?

Third: the cable for charging/downloading - what is it called?

I have googled for the latter two, but not found what I need. Should be in manual, but not found that yet either. But the first one I'm really stumped by.

    1. Helmet mount strap :D

    2. Likely a micro SD card (HC, or high capacity), make sure you get a fast one. I'm using a SanDisk Ultra 32 GB in my camera, no complaints about it so far. Using a different camera, but I doubt the Roam 2 would use anything else.

    3. Technically a mini USB cable. Normal USB on one end, mini USB on the other. However, Contour apparently saw fit to require special wiring, so you can't just use a standard mini USB cable without modifying it. Have a look at this thread for more info: http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/charging-a-contour-roam-camera-on-the-fly.136135/

    re #3

yup. saw that thread, which is what sent me scurrying back to you knowledgeable folk...

re #1 the bit i want it the little doo-dad that you connect to the camera so it doesn't fall off. not the helmet mount per se. ie the little dangly bit that is centre of the pic

(i have a helmet mount and a handlebar mount and want to be able to switch bewteen them )

Oh. The dangly bit, what's basically a thin thread with a plastic clip-in thing? That's what the people who made my camera call the "security strap". >.> I've had a brief look on ebay but can't find it as a separate item. That said, just make one yourself - grab the smallest one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141120130914 and use a piece of thread or something more confidence inspiring.

About the cable, if you're not happy re-soldering a mini USB cable yourself I reckon the second-best option would be to get the Contour charger mentioned in that thread.

Yes, that was a new term for me as well. :D

10 mm because your existing one is 10 mm? I wouldn't be too hung up on that, just make two new ones.

Re: the SD card, yeah I think an Ultra will be fine. FYI, SD cards come capable of writing at different speeds. Check this out:

    http://www.sandisk.co.uk/products/memory-cards/sd/

Ultimately, the higher quality of video, the better the card you need. The top of the range GoPro Hero 3+ works fine with an Extreme card, but the top of the range Contour+ did not need that speed therefore Ultra will be fine for the Contour Roam 2. Indeed, from looking here, Contour suggest that a class 2 card will do fine:

    http://help.contour.com/customer/portal/topics/127103-micro-sd-cards/articles

So theoretically, the lowest spec Sandisk card will apparently work. I might still be tempted to get the next one up (Ultra) which is class 10 and thus you are relatively future-proofed, unless you GoPro Hero 3+ ;)

You can just use a normal USB cable so long as you don't want to download while continuing to film. At least, wfm with many random USB cables...

    @dave I've tried a few that don't work.

do you think this one would? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-70cm-USB-2-0-Male-A-to-B-Mini-5-Pin-Cable-Lead-XC03-/271176094403

Most.mobiles also sold with a security strap if you have any old mobile boxes sitting around. If you've not ordered yet I have a couple to hand.

@SRD - that certainly looks like the right cable. When you say you have tried a few that don't work, do you mean that the cable doesn't fit in your Contour, or it does fit but it doesn't allow your Contour to connect to your computer? If the latter, do you know if the cable works for other things?

I've used a variety of those cables without issue with my Contour.

Thanks Kenny. cables connect but only charge, no data download. mostly ones that i had for charging lights etc, but since i had them sitting here, with same connectors figured it was worth a try. no joy though.

That is particularly odd. I have many of these cables which definitely work, which you are welcome to have - indeed, I have just located one on a windowsill and tested it with my Contour to ensure it works, and you are welcome to have it.

I have a sneaking suspicion it might not be the cable that's the problem, but it would be good to rule it out first.

Happy to drop off at some mutually convenient location (I live in Corstorphine, work in Leith), or can drop it off to you in an evening or morning this week. Drop me a PM if you're interested.

If the cable you're trying was for charging lights, maybe it only has the power pins connected. I have plenty that came with little hard disks, cameras or contours. Like Kenny, I just connect them and it works. If you and Kenny can't be mutually convenient, I can pop out to see academics any time and call it work. I'd call it "business development" but that could incite a lynching - a capitalist pig and a landlord on the same lamp post.

@SRD I've never used my "dangly bit". it's still in the box and you're welcome to it.
