I'm sure there's scope for action under DDA with the way these barriers disadvantage certain people more than others.

I used yesterday's #sneckdown to take a couple of photos of the Corstorphine Bank Drive chicane.
Quite surprised I was the 3rd or 4th bike through at 7.30am. By tea time it was impossible to say but lots of people inconvienced by the tight chicane.

Went along the Innocent path for the first time in a while today and noticed that the barriers at the underpass have been replaced by nicely spaced bollards. There's a new dropped kerb at the roundabout too.
Apparently someone took out the barriers with a stolen bulldozer. Currently pondering the lessons that can be learned from this.
Hacksaws are more manageable.

Quite a few chicanes have been removed and replaced with bollards in the last couple of months, on or around The Innocent Path. Not sure what has been driving this, they've not been done as part of any other works, but very welcome.

@hankchief, you should cycle to Carstairs Village theyhave a fantastic series of six traffic calming Chicanes three each way and all that let bikes sail through. Is fab.
Hang on - should we really be facilitating quick escapes from Carstairs?
@urchaidh - The Pop-up PoP along NCN1 in 2019, which visited in some of these barriers, was attended by a Sustrans employee who said she was working with the council on exactly these kinds of issues. The council also has a list of "minor improvements", which they are apparently getting back to fixing, having paused work on it in 2020.
I presume one (or both) of these is now bearing fruit.
@Frenchy. I'd forgotten about that, even though I was there. Seems so long ago but considering how glacial progress is on these things, and accounting for the lockdowns and focus on SfP, that would be about the right timing.
@morningsider, Carstairs Village, very liberating to cycle through now. carstairs Junction then State Hospital less so.

Which is an improvement, of sorts, from the gubbins that is there now...
As part of my SMPS Parent Council role I'd been talking to council officials about removing the chicane at the bottom of the path to St Peters from Canaan Lane which was causing a bottleneck for parents now that the new school is open.
To my surprise the council officer has come back and said yes they could change it but also asked me what I think the layout should be, rather than suggesting something himself. Thing is... I'm not sure!
The tricky thing is that it exits straight on to a footway and a zebra crossing, so something to slow cyclists down probably is required. I visited today and it's actually a bit better than before as they've removed some temporary barriers but still awkward and I think there is room for improvement. The path is 205cm wide, and there should be 150cm clear on at least one side.
An "Edinburgh Bollard" (~15cm diameter) 150cm from the side would leave a fairly useless gap of ~40cm on the other side. Would it be justifiable to suggest it be removed entirely?
Any suggestions?
I would ask them to reduce the height of the higher stone wall to be the same as the lower one, for a length of maybe 5 metres.
That would improve the sightlines for people exiting the path, as well as for drivers.
I don't think there should be any kind of barrier or bollard
Would probably be better to have a wall in front of space where chicane is and a new opening to west.
I.e. move wall, slow down ‘traffic’ coming down path and not having it go directly on to zebra.
Plus a pavement build out.

Yes, so many missed opportunities to improve this as part of the new school build. We fed back a lot of suggestions but they've all been ignored. Builders are finishing off landscaping and will likely be off site after this week so it's too late for any changes. Though they do still have to restore the kerb build out at the corner...
Wall height change is a great suggestion - I'll feed that back.
There is a new gap in the wall to the west, but it means cutting across where the bike racks and benches are so lots of potential for conflict between bikes and pedestrians, though I suppose no more than current setup.
Path does get extremely busy at school time - kids from SMPS and St Peters currently but from tomorrow there'll be Canaan Lane PS kids and the SMPS Nursery is opening on that site now too. So lots more bikes, scooters and buggies.
They do seem to be mini Sheffield Racks, for kids bikes. I've used them for the a Frog 48 (16" wheels) and they work well. There are allegedly 40 scooter spaces and 40 bike spaces.
Is it a CEC school or some variation of PFI?
Given the intensity of path use, that planting next to the school is perhaps unwise…
But obviously path width/provision for all the schools is inadequate.
Is there another path up from the west of the new school?
Nothing westward allowing you to go north until you hit Morningside Road, though the cycle lane heading that way is closed due to the flats being built at the old public toilets.

But the existing path could have been widened too(?)
There are really only two options:
1. Keep the chicane.
2. Remove the chicane.
I would favour removal, as the chicane is clearly causing a problem for parents and children, but not obviously solving any problem.
If the Council raise concerns about potential conflict between pedestrians/cyclists/cars then you could suggest they paint CYCLE SLOW on the path, as they have done where the Meadows-Inncoent cycle path crosses Clerk Street.
Depends what “the issue” is.
Chicanes/guardrails are usually seen as for ‘stopping children running into the road’
There, buggies and volume of people presumably more of an issue than bikes?
After the toilet flats are built, will the road be open from Morningside Road?
Is a bike lane next to the kerb ‘optimum’?
