It's got to be almost that time of year again I think?

For just one day, you can only ride your bike in the lowest gear it has.

This will give many of us a much-needed reminder of how drivers treat novice cyclists. I find it's easy to have a peaceful life on the bike when you average over 20mph between lights. Getting over Picardy Place at 5mph and negotiating the multiple lane changes up Leith Street at the same speed - it's an eye-opener.

Please be careful if you do try it. Remember that you won't be used to riding slowly. Perhaps an OAP would be willing to drop by and give you some advice.

    *looks at his bikes*

*One has a lowest gear of 82" which does cause some OAP issues from the slow start*

*One has a lowest of 66"*

*One has a lowest of 37"*

*One has a lowest of 21"*

    URmmm....can I pretty please ride bike #2?

Actually it seems we all missed it by about seven weeks!

Lowest gear? 22", 22", 23" or 28". I'll be using my Brompton, then.

I sometimes use my Pashley if I get the train to Haymarket. I generally average about 8mph on that bike, it doesn't really go any faster. I must admit that cycling to the Meadows area is a scary experience on that bike even for me.

We'll need a reverse Strava set of segments. Who can go the slowest over X?

My lowest is, thankfully, 39/28. Are you allowed to ride with a high cadence?

@Baldcyclist Maybe you need a different route? My route between Haymarket and the Meadows is one of my favourites for being so peaceful. I go Dalry Road - Dalry Place (the colonies) - Morrison Crescent - silly zig-zag - Brandfield Street - Gilmore Park - Leamington Terrace - Leamington Walk (Bruntsfield Links) - South Meadow Walk - Middle Meadow Walk.
My bike is if anything heavier and bigger than a Pashley, so riding like a granny is entirely necessary on the steeper uphill segments on any day of the year, but it's not difficult.

@Kenny: my Dad trained us kids to ride obstacle courses at far less than walking pace. Maybe we'll see how much of that has remained with me...

Would be a great exercise in empathy. Slow Travel - it's the future you know!

I had single speed Paper Bike that was ideal. Got Darkerside's old Stowaway folder. 3 speed SA. Can ride in first and lower saddle and keep tyres squidgy.

I can lend it out suitably prepped ;-)
