Can anyone advise on whom to contact in the council to email about the dangerous state of the road at the Kings Theatre junction please?

I've had 3 punctures (including todays) from the terrible road surface, including the exposed drain cover edge which I hit this morning and gave me a flat.

I've previously Fixmyroaded and Clarenced this area before but our illustrious CEC have done nothing and it's getting downright deadly.

@Condor I'd try Andrew Burns, he's very aware of the problems here particularly as he cycles across it most days too.

I've previously reported this junction (as have others here) to the council, and got the poor response that they've patched some of the worst of the holes (badly) and that while they did intend to completely resurface it, some gas main works got in the way a few years back and it was delayed and then wasn't rebudgeted for and at the time of writing it was intended to "do something" about it, but there wasn't any budget yadda yadda yadda.

In addition to what k'nik has said - which is all true - a further delay may be because a consultation is about to start on fundamentally reshaping that junction, as part of the canal-meadows-innocent cycle project.

Send the Council a bill for the replacement tubes tyres?

I don't really know how anyone rides regularly around town on a road bike with the state of the roads. When I am trying to leave town on my road bike, I have to pick my way past the canyon on Colinton Road and so many other challenges. Sometimes I doubt that the descent of Leith Walk should be attempted without full suspension.

@Charlethepar when I used to live at the bottom of Leith Walk I would often make the mountain bike my transport of choice, purely for this reason. Descent at 20+ mph on skinny(ish) tyres was scary.

I have recently put one of my bikes back on the road after a long period of storage.

I used to commute 16 miles per day in London on 700 x 21 tyres with almost zero punctures.

These tyres are not suitable for today's roads and I am now using 700 x 28.

I find most things are possible on a road bike (steel) with 25 tyres. I used to use Gatorskins with minimal punctures but found they wore through rather too quickly. Now use Panaracer Pasela PT which have added aesthetic benefit of skin sidewalls.

OT but not far away - I went over a hole at the junction of Merchiston Ave and Colinton Road last week, and felt something go snap inside my saddle. It now makes a constant creaking noise and feels unsupportive on one side. New saddle time :-(

I tweeted the CEC southside team and they said they would send a road inspector out. Further investigation when I got to work showed that the sidewall of my Schwalbe ZX tyre had been cut and when I pumped the tube up to 120 psi it created a bubble out the hole (which explains why I punctured again afterwards). Normally I'd have Marathon tyres on for more protection but I still had the race ones on from only arriving back from the London Triathlon at 11pm the previous night. More fool me.

I've since made use of the Continental Tyre Amnesty and had new race tyres fitted for nowt, which I'll be taking immediately off and getting the marathons back on.

It was the kings junction crossing east to west that had most influence on me buying a mountain bike rather than a hybrid. I was finding it impossible to stay seated across it.

Anyone got or know of a good video of how tricky turning right at the Kings Theatre is?

Keen to show the council why a feeder ride going through without police support is a bad idea.

    Thanks

Don't think I have one to hand. I could film you one at lunchtime.

@HanckChief - I'm sure there are clearer examples, but here's one:

    @Frenchy - thanks a useful reminder.

@wingpig - if you are able to do us one that would be helpful. It would be good to have a full cycle in the ASL so you get
    1. the traffic coming past your RHS turning right into GP
    2. those coming past you on the left for the left filter out of GO
    3. Waiting in the middle for oncoming traffic from Tarvit street to stop.

Gives me the shudders just thinking about it. Why is the canal-Meadows taking so long :-(

@HankChief & wingpig - I could probably do a triple camera arrangement tomorrow (fixed front & rear plus helmet aimed).

During editing you could choose the most useful view - I've no expertise in editing, but am happy to be the camera mount!

Sounds great thanks (could also be useful for keeping up pressure on getting Canal-meadows built).

If I were directing a video with unlimited time/resources I would consider having a camera on a following bike that stayed back a little so could show how exposed the front rider is whilst waiting and then making the turn. Just a suggestion...

I can't manage 4 cameras/2 bikes, unless wingpig might be available tomorrow lunchtime too?

Alternatively, it could be achieved by filming a 'random' cyclist making the turn.

I can be there tomorrow to film from the pavement if useful? Can also edit videos.

Can only do 12:00 to 12:45 tomorrow as someone's booked a two-hour meeting during lunchtime. I'll see if I can get a second-camera's-lens-view from my phone in my phonebag attached to the childseat today.

"I can be there tomorrow to film from the pavement if useful? Can also edit videos."

Including catching that curious mismatch between eastbound/westbound lights, if that still happens?

@HankChief if you can get footage of a civilian civilianing I reckon that would be an additional bonus.

@all - Sounds like a plan. Without knowing IwratS' availability, I suggest 12:15 at the junction.

Person A faces east and films both the traffic lights on Gilmore Place and person B, person B faces does the opposite from Tarvit St. When each person's lights change, they raise their hand.

EDIT: I just remembered I need to pick up my bike from the Bike Co-op tomorrow anyway, so I can also be a camera operator.

I'm now looking forward to watching a dramatically edited, multi-camera sequence in the style of 24, and regretting not working near enough to conveniently come to help out.
