but a bicycle wheel is a gyroscope! And a bike won't fall over if left to ride free and straight...

Haven't balance bikes already eradicated the need for stabilisers?

My boy sadly never took to the balance bike.

Mileage with balance bikes seems to vary and it sounds like we were pretty lucky. Ours really loved them and used them daily to get around.

They got pedal bikes recently and pretty much jumped on to them and were cycling themselves within minutes - so long as you got them started. Figuring out how to get themselves started and get their feet on the pedals took a wee bit longer.

my boy's still not had a fall. i'm a bit worried about this - wouldn't it be better if he had that experience earlier on?

they used to say you couldn't ride a horse until you'd fallen off 7 times. Personally I think falling off is over-rated. I don't remember coming off my bike much as a kid and the one memorable time I did (attempting to bunny hop a curb) has left me mentally scarred, to the point where I can't bunny hop anything now.

wingpiglet 2010 wiped out on his second full day on the balance bike, going too fast down a slope in Figgate Park and getting the front wheel speedwobbles. Since then he's footscraped down most slopes, and has not yet converted his instincts to his pedalbike's hand-operated brakes.

Stabilisers avoided with small wingpiglet this afternoon, but he is notably swervier than the big one was at the same age.

I have a vague idea when I learned that it took ages to realise you generally go in the direction you're looking. Maybe smaller wingpiglet looks around more?
