    Hi

I have a Kryptonite Evolution 4 Series U Lock, which I keep at work. It's spent the last year hanging in a covered bike cage (there's a roof, but otherwise open to the elements).

It's started to get quite difficult to open - not the lock mechanism itself, but separating the U-bend bit from the handle once it's unlocked. I've tried spraying all the connecting bits, and the lock mechanism, with GT85 but to little effect.

I'm a little worried that one of these days it's going to be completely stuck, locking my bike to the stand.

Any ideas for a solution, or is it new lock time?

GT85 and its friends aren't particularly good lubricants. Try giving the shackle a good rub with emery paper if it's corroded and then oil the whole thing heavily. Let it sit for a few days and wipe off the excess. Should last forever really. I lube my lock as part of servicing the bike.

Ah, OK - thanks, I'll give that a try.

I couldn't see any obvious mechanical reason why it would be happening so maybe that will do the trick.

I've got some heavy d-locks that tend to seize up at the shackle - sanding and greasing (rather than oiling in my case) seems to work.

There tends to be obvious rust on the "pins" that insert into the shackle and at the "sockets" of the shackle - the paint that covered these areas having long since flaked off (cue comments about Edinburgh road surfaces causing locks to rattle).

Thanks again for all these suggestions.

Had a go at it this morning with stuff I had to hand, so gave the shackles a scrub with some steel wool and then liberally dosed them with lithium grease.

    Big improvement!

Graphite-based lube works really well in locks.

This means I sharpen a pencil into mine every few months (taking care to catch the wood shavings). Despite sounding like one of those 'One weird trick' spam adverts, it seems to actually work...
