Wanted to collate replies from the council on cycling issues that have been raised with them. The cycling@edinburgh.gov.uk address seems to get a well considered response within a few weeks.

Please post any replies (and context if required) even if they relate to something already in this thread. Hopefully we should then get a clearer picture of what is being done and see updates as more people email.

I'd ask that discussions about any responses are started in a different thread to make this easier to search

Craigleith Path Junction And Leith Links Path Improvements

    Craigleith Junction
A new coloured surfacing product is being trialled at Craigleith which has installation benefits as well as an extended design life. Although this product has been used successfully in other cities such as London, in both cycleway and on-road situations, we have received a number of complaints about poor skid resistance in wet conditions.
The manufacturer of the coloured surfacing has tested it and found that the friction is less than that of the surrounding tarmac path. In light of these results, we are working with the manufacturer to establish a suitable solution to this problem and aim to get this resolved as soon as possible.
The loose gravel is from the new drainage trench which was provided to address flooding at the junction. The gravel is used to cover larger drainage stones, which at previous sites have been used as ammunition against lights/windows. We are currently reviewing the trench design with the aim of mitigating the problem of loose gravel spreading over the path. In the meantime I have reported this issue to our maintenance team who will arrange for the area to be swept.

    Leith Links Path
I can confirm that the barriers at Leith Links were installed incorrectly by the contractor. We will be arranging for the barriers to be realigned to provide a 2.5m gap between them and to ensure that their ends do not overlap. This arrangement should ensure that cyclists with trailers, mobility scooters, etc can traverse the chicane comfortably. We will also arrange for reflective panels to be added to the barriers.
Regarding the tactile paving I can confirm that this has been installed correctly as per Department for Transport guidance. The path will be segregated with a white line for the section past St Marys School. The side nearest the school is reserved for pedestrians (‘ladder’ style tactile paving has been used to indicate this) and the other side is for the use of cyclists (‘tramline’ style tactile paving).
We are currently reviewing the distance that should be provided between tactile paving and barriers/chicanes such as this. This will inform the design of future installations undertaken by the Council.

NORTH MEADOW WALK – TACTILE PAVING

The tactile paving has been installed to assist visually impaired pedestrians and is in accordance with national guidance. The reduction of cyclists’ speeds was not an intention of the paving although it can help to highlight the transition to unsegregated areas shared with pedestrians where more consideration is needed.
We have reviewed the location you raised concerns about and we consider that the tactile paving at the western end of North Meadow Walk (where this joins the path to the signalised cycle/pedestrian crossing of Melville Drive) could potentially be an issue for cyclists. The problem appears to result from cyclists crossing the paving at an angle as they exit the link path to the signalised crossing.
We shall review the options to improve this situation - it is likely this will involve increasing the distance between the tactile paving and the path spur. This will allow cyclists to straighten up their bikes before crossing the paving. We plan to have any improvements completed by late summer. Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention.
