Err didn't I read up thread that the South side of George St is to become two way traffic?

"Why on earth does the lane not right up to the cobbled parking bay? A yard of wasted space?"
For drivers to get to the ticket machine from their parked car? But it's not as if they needed this before.

Presumably that's where the barriers are going? Y'know, to stop parked cars driving "accidentally" into the segregated cycle lane or pedestrian reservation?
I'm going to wait and see what it's like when finished before passing judgement. I think I can guess why the lane crosses the cobbles at that point, but I'll take a look first before coming to any hard conclusions.

Ah yes, good point about the planters. I'd forgotten about them!

The cigarette butt receptacles. Of course.

True. Fools and bairns... ;-)

@Rabid Hamster: uh yeah, I think I already said something similar about 'barriers'.

Interestingly enough, nowhere on the plans does it show the cycle lane crossing cobbly/setty central reservation. I'm presuming this is to allow cyclists to cross to the 'other side' via ped crossings before the junction. I'm also assuming the photo is the view from Charlotte Square.

Of course the Festival is coming.
Seems the 'cycle lanes' will become "access lanes". Deliveries are apparently supposed to be between 0600 and 1030, so that's the rush hour sorted.

So during morning rush hour the narrow as it is "segragated" cycle lane will be available for anyone who fancies a spot of loading in an empty lane. I think CEC has some work to do on their definition of segregated.

I took a quick detour along George Street on the way home tonight. I rode from St Andrew Square to Charlotte Square, including along the first section of cycle track between Castle Street and Charlotte Square. First impressions:
1. The cycle lane is wider than the previous photo shows, but still pretty narrow - two bikes can pass, but overtaking could be tricky if at all busy.
2. It's definitely nicer to cycle along than amongst the general traffic.
3. The lane currently ends by dumping you out onto a traffic island (no dropped kerb at present) in the middle of George St. Even if a dropped kerb is installed and the pedestrian crossings changed to toucans, it is still difficult to see where you would be meant to go. The photo earlier in the thread must have been taken from this traffic island.
4. No indication of how the junctions will work at present.Posted 10 years ago # -

I wonder if they keep the Montreal ones clear of snow in the winter, or even if anyone wants to bike at all at -10C and humid?

I have a friend who was planning where he would live after leaving the US Army. The first place he visited was Madison, Wisconsin in the middle of winter. He said that there were a surprisingly large number of people still cycling in snow and sub-zero temperatures. That was the clinching factor for him and he decided to live there without visiting anywhere else.
He's never regretted it.

Don't know if these were discussing the cycle lanes or the Festival eateries, but didn't seem to be much work happening.
Nice free parking for some -

Probably congratulating themselves on 'how the reality of what they've done matches their marvellous vision for the future of sustainable transport in Edinburgh', or some such guff!

I had a look at George Street today. I would pretty much agree with Morningsider's comments that it's brilliant to not have to worry about motorists, but it's perhaps a wee bit narrow. In fact, I would say that it isn't a great deal wider than the Tavistock Place setup in That London, which is very tight when busy. I wonder—indeed, I would hope—if it becomes popular, that it's as well patronised.
I was wondering why there's a Give Way line here:
given that North Castle Street is hardly the busiest road in town, and Castle Street largely pedestrianised, and it would have been proactive of CEC to prioritise the east and westbound cyclists and pedestrians.

It's a de facto roundabout. I thought it looked a little narrow. Let's just say there'll be no one passing me. But I'll use it as much as possible just to make the point.

Likewise.

Likewise. Torpedo on standby.

As will I, but how to get to George Street?
Option 1: Waterloo Place/East Princes St Taxi turning area/tramlines/St Andrew Sq
Option 2: London Road/Picardy Place Death By Roundabout/York Place race track/St Andrew Sq/tramlines
Option 3: Broughton Street/Albany Street/Weird zig-zag 'infrastructure'/Toucan crossing/Then either: a) cross tramlines twice in St Andrews Sq, or: b) Queen Street race track/Hang left at some point.
Not ideally connected, one might say.

"Not ideally connected, one might say."
But the blue marks suggest something might be about to happen.

@chdot: Marking up utilities from Symology data, and the evidence on the ground already. Standard practice before you start digging!

Yes, but what are they going to do?
