Councillor Lesley Hinds, transport leader, said: “The George Street trial has been a real experiment for the city, and has allowed us to truly listen and respond to the public throughout.
“Now we are focusing on the future of the street, and a long-term solution that will benefit everyone. I look forward to seeing the outcome of our design team’s research.”

Is there going to be a way to comment that does not involve turning up in person? Or are they trying to avoid having lots of nutters off the internet comment? Do you have to be concerned enough to make the effort to get there and if you don't/can't then you're not concerned enough?

And we want to know what you think. Would you like to see the street made more pedestrian and bike friendly? How about space for more outdoor events all year round? How important do you think it is to maintain existing car parking and space for traffic?
Let us know here, on our Facebook page, or by emailing newsen@edinburghnews.com

One thing that is strikingly ugly in all the George St photos is all the traffic lights.
Get rid of the cars, get rid of the lights.

we are currently working on a vision for the future of George Street, where a successful trial of segregated cycling provision was recently completed.

The comments were a hoot, especially Happier Bus Traveller who believes the trial was scrapped because it wasn't any good.

"Can i complete a citizens arrest on a cyclist who is on a pavement and hold then till the police arrive?"

I think the EEN have clicked on to the fact that allowing Lesley Hinds to write articles kills two birds with one stone:
- no need for a 'real' journo to write anything.
- excellent clickbait for all the Hinds haters out there.Posted 9 years ago # -

to roll out new bus stops and digital billboards on George Street has come under fire amid fears they will spoil views and “damage” the area’s historic character.
New shelters are currently being erected across the city as part of a multi-million-pound contract between the council and global advertising giant JCDecaux.
But all nine of JCDecaux’s recent applications to pepper George Street with replacement bus shelters and three-metre-high illuminated billboards have been recommended for refusal by officials.

I notice from the "Key Findings" on the Broughton Spurtle article that there's no mention of car parking or congestion caused by the experiment.
So either CEC have nobbled the findings to suit themselves or they were genuinely not one of the top most commented items.

Good positive comment piece in the EEN about the consultation result:
There's also a nice clear summary of the proposals in the print edition:

Yet there should be enough space to keep that and create far more room for window-shopping, pavement cafes and cyclists.

The comments on the main article are ... interesting. I struggle to understand how people can be so against pedestrian improvements on a shopping street. The current George Street is hardly a relaxing place to be and everyone is a pedestrian, most of the time they're there.
I think they should go further and remove all non-resident parking which would also remove traffic going to/from/waiting for those spaces.

And Ian Mowat, chair of the New Town and Broughton Community Council, said he was “generally positive” about the proposals.
He said: “We think what is suggested by the design team would be generally good for George Street and would be welcomed, but we think it’s important that vehicular access is retained and parking provision is retained as much as possible.”

Do people who live in the New Town and Broughton park in George Street?

Surely to goodness we can restore some of the grandeur and make the street better for those not wanting to drive or park on it without raising the Council Tax bill by 28 million?
Simply removing motor traffic would probably go 98% of the way. People managed to cope with kerbs in the 1700s, but admittedly drank less coffee outdoors.

How much are they paying Ironside Farrar (there's an agency that sounds like a Tory MSP if ever there was one) to present childrens' drawings of streets?

@kaputnik: good point! Contrast with what Manchester did for their street changes:

It won't work, it's got LOTS of bus stop islands...

The Glasgow-based sculptor Andy Scott, as part of a major new collaboration with a renowned silversmiths company, is to unveil a 14ft sculpture of a chariot horse on George Street in the centre of the capital for the Festival period.
...
It will sit across a series of suspended parking bays in the middle of George Street, which will be pedestrianised during the Festival in August.

I think a giant statue of a St. Cuthbert's dairy carthorse would be more apt.
