George Street Improvements

If you're within daily exercise distance of George Street, it's worth a wander up there under the lockdown in order to fully visualise what George Street could be like without motor vehicles.

Last night there were maybe 10 cars parked on it (which suggests that the parking demands from residents are somewhat overstated). I walked the full length down the cobbled parking bit and soaked it up.

I remember at the information day at the City Art Centre one of the design team telling me that George Street was too wide to fully pedestrianise. The scale wasn't appropriate and it would feel too empty. Based on last night's experience, I can heartily disagree with that sentiment. It would make a fantastic space for people, with lots of room for on-street activity whilst still allowing for free movement of folk on foot, bike and delivery trolley.

'Too wide to fully pedestrianise' is wonderful. As an insight int the mind of the person saying it that is.

Be nice if Edinburgh had somewhere crowds could easily gather without getting their feet muddy wouldn't it?

Or maybe most of the 'residents' have self-isolated themselves off to their second homes in the Highlands...

I may be nitpicking, but the first two paras are not a good start!

The final proposed concept design for the transformation of historic George Street has been unveiled. Detailed artist’s impressions and a 3D fly-through illustrate how the street could look from 2025.

Good to see plenty of benches in the video. There's only one on the whole street at the moment.

Looks good. Unless I've missed something, they've taken the buses out of the design (IIRC, they were originally down to use the eastern block), which is a big improvement. Maybe that reflects the impact of the wider city mobility plan?

Impressively lukewarm quote from the George Street Association on the News page:
“There is no doubt that the current pre-occupation of George Street Association members is how to recover when the prolonged coronavirus restrictions are lifted. However, we have a mutual interest with the City Council and others involved in this ambitious project to deliver the high-quality changes needed for the future success of this iconic street.

“This overdue transformation to the appearance and operation of George Street will impact on our members and affected businesses in the area will need support throughout the inevitable disruption involved.

“We appreciate the opportunity for ongoing engagement with the City Council on the final concept design and thereafter.”

    Typo or??

    2. Thanks to everyone who contributed so much to help us get to this stage. By 2925 the world will look a little different from George St. No longer a mass of cars circling to find a parking space but a relaxed people-friendly space with something for everyone.

Arguably a daft question even if 1800 new parking places weren't currently being built in the St James centre.

George Street a local street for local drivists? Or, conversely, an international street for drivists from far and wide?

(P.S.:- Haven't read the article. Unwilling to engage with such clickbait).

That "article" must have taken all of 5-10 minutes to put together. I can only hope they paid the author per word so that the reward for such a measly effort was commensurate. Hardly an expose, or in fact anything other than literally regurgitating the opinions spouted in the comments on facebook on the EEN George street post last week.

"Give the people what they want" I suppose....

I like the look of these new plans for the hanging gardens in Babylon. Only one problem, where is everybody going to park?

Yeah - we shouldn't be expecting old people to have to walk round town. They should be walking round their garden to raise money for the NHS instead.

Spokes need to say though where the manager of the rock and roll cafe will park his Range Rover? He prefers to be inside an exclusion zone and right on a bike lane or pavement if that can be arranged. Thanks.

Well if they have that right about deciding to remove buses afterall that's an improvement, especially if they also extend it to taxis except for disabled/elderly passengers and keep the speed limit low for what little is left(and, you know, actually enforce it for once).

It's a shame about the greening having to be "sensitive to the area’s heritage" though, spacing some big statement trees that could one day form a lovely shady canopy along the length would have been much more appealing than a few SUDS(useful as they are) with manicured little hedges.

Don't be fooled by the mock-up images.

The street will be rammed with cars, same as it ever was. (Otherwise, why else would they feel the need to put a traffic light at the ends?)

And we all know, that anywhere cars can physically access, they will appropriate that space

Strong agree with neddie. Without some sort of enforcement (surely CEC can procure rising bollards that actually work?) it will be heavily abused by drivers.

Disappointing that they aren't planning on putting some larger trees in there. If the area's heritage was cool with having a street-long van park up the middle, I'd have thought a few trees (with a view to pollard them as appropriate) shouldn't prove an issue.

Apparently access restrictions will be enforced by cameras. I'm also sceptical that this will work effectively. Even if the technology works well I can't see it being enforced on a zero tolerance basis.

If it's the ANPR systems like those that enforce the bus gates they'll work well enough to punish miscreants (see all the whining about the Little France bus gate etc). However they will not do very much to stop people driving down there in the first place.

So things will be "exciting" for the first few months at least.
