I would have to move house to make that possible - to that city of cyclists' dreams where all the roads and cycle paths are smooth and pothole free...

Just spoken to Pashley about this. They acknowledged that the bell does that, but weren't a bit apologetic - seemed to think I was being unreasonable for wanting a bell that only rings when I tell it to. Fortunately Evans have agreed to refund me.

The ping bell on the tandem has given up the ghost and tonight I replaced it with a old school thumb push bell, which makes the most delightful sound. It's loud and clear (you can adjust the volume by how hard you push it).

I especially like that it doesn't give off the impatience that multiple pings do and to my ear is much more polite.

I'm rather looking forward to tomorrow's commute and testing it out on some headphone and non-headphone wearing pedestrians.

I will let you know how I get on :-)

Yep. Bringggg bringggg shiny metal thing. No idea how it works but all kind of cogs etc inside it.

Much more controllable (& loud) than a ping bell although makes a noise on the push and the way back, so will need to temper my enthusiasm until I get used to it.

Top tip for bell ringing happiness: Don't get into a competition with @Greenroofer. His bell is massive and gives off the most melodious noise...

Just reread this thread with amusement thanks to the index helpfully provided by Arellcat. It seems that I failed to report the most amusing incident since aquiring my 'large ding dong bell' in this thread, if at all on the forum...

29th September 2016 Facebook/Twitter post: initially startled but ultimately impressed two female joggers on the towpath, one of whom commented, "that's a big one!" #largedingdongbell

Unfortunately the years of commuting and locking my bike to racks and, most notably, next to other bikes, haven't been kind to my bell; it's now somewhat rusty and slightly bent so rarely produces as satisfying a ring as when new.

Someone I know was posting about this on Facebook today: https://www.voilaz.com/products/duck-bicycle-bell-head-lights-1

I like the description of its noise as 'cartoon rubber horn alarm'.

I bought crane bell from bike station 2 years ago cost £ 15 to 20 quid but a good sound and durable made in japan, after buying many rubbish bells that broke in a year

    cartoon rubber horn alarm

I like that the duck's open face helmet looks like a duck. Would be fun to put on the Elephant Bike; though the one with the groovy The Fall Guy style stuntman helmet might look good on the nose of the torpedo, in a sort of 'big black Mack with a can on back' way.

There ought to be squeaky rubber elephant head horns for on elephant bikes that make a trumpeting noise when squeezed...

Maybe an MP3 sample programmed into an Arduino hooked up to a hacked Hornit horn and a hacked squeaky elephant?

My bike suffered catastrophic bell failure around halfway into my commute this morning when my large ding dong bell abruptly stopped ringing, shortly after which part of the ringer actually fell out of the bell so I had to stop to retrieve it. I fear that I've lost at least one clip, but I hope to be able to fix it, although I may need to find a schematic of a working bell in order to achieve this goal.

Cameron Toll last night one of the chained-up bikes was screaming in apparent agony. I tracked it down to a combined light/electronic horn unit which was still active.

I unplugged the power lead as the noise was genuinely unpleasant and a bit alarming. Just as I did that the owner reappeared. Could have been embarrassing but it seems the horn turns itself on at random all the time so no sweat.

    All hail the humble bell.

@IWRATS I have yet to find the information that I require online so is there any chance that you could take a photo or a video of the interior of your large bell, which I'm assuming will have the same ringer mechanism as mine?

Should be possible, aye. I've fixed it already - lost a circlip and had to fabricate one from scrap.

    It's basically one of these;

Aha, well found. I'm missing the circlip from the top of the ringer, which is why that fell out, but I fear that something is missing from underneath it as well - I can't see how the flat, flexible bit of metal that connects to the lever is supposed to actually make the ringer move...

Yes, that's the bit I lost too. I'll take the lid off mine at lunchtime for a keek.

Love the comment on the above article:
    "Pah! Old fashioned technology!
"If I want a new bell it will link to my Apple watch, into my Apple phone and into my heartrate meter to sense when I've sensed a danger and ring the bell for me. Total cost including phone and watch £1500 and a job well done. I'm sure one will be on kickstarter any moment.
"Or I suppose I could get the £7 one."

    :D

@LivM I got the "Knog Oi Bell" for my Secret Santa at work two years ago. I really like the look. I used it on my flat-bar hybrid. On my drop-bar bike I kept the bell that the bike came with because I can rotate the hammer to convenient position.

'Mellifluous' might have been invented to describe this bell:

@bill I'm temporarily back to a basic (Sustrans-branded) bell with a rotatable hammer, although this has already been problematic because as I approached the exit of the Slateford Aqueduct this morning, I went to ring the bell a few times to attempt to discourage anyone from joining as I was exiting, but the hammer rotated away from my with my first ring and I was then unable to find it again whilst negotiating the cobbles - as a result, someone continued to join the aqueduct as I was exiting and it was awkward.
