And as any fule kno, there's a right way and a wrong way to lay setts if you want a durable road surface. Edinburgh's cobbles are a stupid, hackneyed and wholly inappropriate road surface. Setts on the other hand...
If you look carefully, there are some sections of Warrender Park Road that are still in superb—and highly cyclable—condition with flat tops and tight bonds, and other sections that have been repaired, subsided, reinstated even worse, and subsided again.
If you want to see how to do it properly, try cycling up and down Lynedoch Street in Glasgow.

@Arellcat - looks like a great example also behind the parked VW polo to the right of shot in your link, where smaller setts bave been used to effect a repair and installed in the wrong orientation.

L'gow Palace has a mix of surfaces on its entrance road.
