Popping through to see a friend tomorrow and thought I'd cycle it. Anyone got any advice on a decent route. Don't really fancy the canal...

Avoiding the Sustrans route beyond Airdrie is a good route!

The bit between Bathgate and Airdrie is good enough.

Might be damp, but no wind.

The M8's a nightmare. Potholes, traffic and really bleak over Harthill.

I did Armadale to Loch Lomond (Luss) a couple of months back, via Glasgow.

The A89 is fine. I wasn't in any great hurry so took the NCN75 from Armadale to Plains - where it spits you back out onto the A89 anyway. The A89 from Armadale to Airdrie is generally pretty quiet and decent enough. In fact, it's reasonable enough from Edinburgh to Armadale, as I use it quite often when going home on the road bike.

When I hit Airdrie I went back onto the NCN75 through, which is a bit windier, but certainly quieter than the A89 through there.

Once I hit Coatbridge I was fed up with the convoluted NCN75 twists and loops so just hit the A89 again through Bargeddie, Baillieston, Shettleston, Parkhead, London Road and Bridgeton and into Glasgow City Centre and the Clyde Walkway.

Traffic was OK, but it was Easter Friday morning so probably lighter than normal.

If you have the time and the wind is not strong from the west you could reverse the pedal for Scotland 100 mile route. A70, A71 beyond Glasgow then swing back in on the A77.

has anyone here cycled from edinburgh to troon? have my eye on a jaunt to belfast but not too sure about the route. cyclestreets.net suggests this route ed-troon which goes thru glasgow and seems reasonable. Just wondering if there's any local recommendations?

    cheers!

Went for the A89 route this afternoon and it was BUSY from Ed - bathgate. Some nice cycle paths down the side but still really stressful (and headwind bah)

BAthgate to airdrie was awesome. Such an ace road and some lovely scenery.
Have to admit that I set off late so I had to shoot for the train to get to my mates on time. Still only just made it however didn't trust my estimate of 1 hour from Airdrie to the west end of glasgow!

Think I will take the CX bike on the canal next time. It's just as boring but less traffic!

    Cheers for suggestions.

I do want to try the Reverse pedal for scotland. If I'd had the whole day I'd've done that.

The A89 is definitely busier from Edinburgh to Bathgate, but pretty quiet from Bathgate to Airdrie (as is the train, funnily enough - Bathgate/Armadale seems to be the dividing line between those looking East and West).

I checked my Garmin mapping for the Loch Lomond trip I did and I took 1 hour and 12 mins from (roughly) Airdrie train station to Partick - and I wasn't going all that hard, so you may well have made it within the hour.

The Troon route looks like A77 after Glasgow which is fine as the m77 runs parallel. There is also the sustrans route if you have the time. Goes down another railway that beeching closed, through my home village of lochwinnoch. Wee folding bike can give a77 details and diarmid might have the lochwinnoch route.

Lot of road modifications around symington on the m77 a77 at the moment but should not impact

I do find it rather hilarious that I cycled 57km towards glasgow and got a train for the last bit, £4.50 and returned last night £12.50 so total cost was £17.

If I'd have just got the train through and back it would have been £12.50... So cycling actually cost me money! I should have just gone for the rest of the route @dg145. I think I just couldn't face glasgow traffic at rush hour though.

Was a solid days riding. Pity I'm now stuck inside for this lovely day!
