    Hi All,

All excited about picking up my new bike tomorrow only to be told by Evans that only one tyre has made it to store (continental touring plus 28mm). Stock issues mean that it'll be about another 10-14 days before the second tyre arrives.

I'm impatient and keen to get commuting on my new bike but it comes with cyclocross tyres on it and I'm not keen to leave them on...I wanted something thinner and racier hence the touring plus.

Is there a similar tyre out there? sorry I'm a newbie and not up to speed with tyres and there seems to be a lot of choice about!

it's mainly road and cycle path but felt a touring tyre would give the good mix of rolling speed vs puncture resistance.

I've read that Marathon+'s are bulletproof but don't know if I need to go to that level.

any fife or long distance commuters able to help or give advice?

    Thanks.

It is not a close match but I have a pair of 25mm gatorskins still in their boxes if nothing more appropriate turns up.

If you had to drive to Edinburgh knowing that there were going to be occasional bullets fired at you and bullet-proof cars were affordable you'd buy a bullet-proof car. Marathon+

Marathon plus bullet proof but not hawthorn proof. However unlikely to puncture. If they do they are a faff to get off the wheel. Gatorskins are good against punctures and not so sticky as marathon plus. I go with Gatorskins on my weekend racer and marathon plus on my work commute.

I go with gatorskins for commuting, GP4000s for weekend bike.

Armadilloes if 25 or wider, otherwise Gatorskins.

I got ~4000 miles of city commuting out my Marathons before their first puncture, by which point the tread was worn right off the crown.

Thusly I am unconvinced that the step to Plus is required.

Monsignor Pig, I put 23mm Armadillos on black fruity and thence onto the stiff little fixer on your recommendation. They've been faultless. I am confuse.

I had Marathon Plus on my last bike then put Conti Touring Plus on this one and hated them as the rolling resistance really slowed me down. Switched to Conti Grand Prix 4 Seasons and no punctures, better grip and really fast. If you want a long distance touring tire then I'd go Marathon Plus rather than Touring Plus

    Thanks All,

I'm more confused now haha. Having had a look on the internet I might go for the armadillos...now just need to decide if 25mm or 28mm is the better choice :-/

I'm sure after a few months/miles on the bike will make choosing tyres easier!

    :-)

    "They've been faultless."

I had a couple which did this after five months - the 25s developed bald bits but didn't separate, as did 23s. Maybe they changed the recipe.

I have a love hate relationship with marathon +. I hate them, they are heavy, and slow, about 7 minutes worth of slower in 22 miles. ButI love the fact that in over 4000 miles of daily commuting there has been no need to take the tyre off of the wheel at all. In that respect no complaints. These tyres just seem to go on and on :) did I mention that I hate Zoz

    Kook fit other wise..

M+ might be slightly heavier but are worth the faff of getting them on (which isn't really a hassle) and as I ride a heavy steel Dawes Galaxy, the slight extra weight over my conti GP4000 is neither here nor there.

Look in a local bike shop and get what ever for think will do (after this thread), as you appear to be in a rush and can't wait for wiggle orders.

I've been using Continental gatorskins for a couple of years. I've covered several thousand miles and their not bullet proof I've had less than 5 punctures in that distance, every single one caused by glass.

The hardest thing with them is locating and removing the tiny pieces of glass in the tyre each time it happens.

I found Conti SuperSports to be a good compromise of cost, weight, bulletproof-ness and rolling resistance.
The SuperSport Plus version is weightier as it has an extra layer of something in the tread (nuke-proof basically). Rolling resistance takes a hit though (tyre has less 'flex'). Only had one puncture when I was rolling on the SuperSports, and that was the seam around a valve that failed.

You might also want to consider Vitoria Randoneurs (Decathlon sell them...) as they have a Kevlar layer and felt pretty good when I last had them on.

Right now I'm rolling with Vitoria Rubino's. Cheap, fast(well faster than the Conti SuperSports), have some puncture resistance and (crucially) easy to fit. I got mine from Ribble and they were under £10 each.

One thing to note - you might want to check that the Rubino's get on ok with your rims. I have an Omega CFX rear wheel and the tyre kept on bulging off the rim at inopportune moments (such as when you're late home or riding a sportive...). Fitted the tyre onto a spare Alex R500 rear and...all is peachy.
