Airport cycling advice kiosk thing

    Hello,

the other day while at the airport I was interested to see that at the luggage carrousels they have an option to check out local advice for cycling at the transport advice "kiosk". I had assumed this would be directed at people arriving with bicycles on the plane - I know some people do that to tour Scotland etc. It's a shame then that there is no real cycle provision properly marked at all until the A8.

The computer attempts to direct people to the sustans site - which doesn't work at the terminal:

Without some sort of half-decent cycling provision from the airport, this seems pretty half-arsed and pointless to me, but perhaps I'm being mean.

That does sound totally lame, but to be fair I don't suppose many people take a bike to Edinburgh on a plane without having some idea of where they're going.

Dutch punters might be horrified if they try to cycle into town, but that horror only dawns at the A8, not in the terminal. And they'd have to pay €500 excess baggage to get their mamafiets here.

that is a good point…. I wonder a bit I suppose for whom it's intended.. I now cycle to the airport and leave my bike there if I only have hand-luggage which while not a great physical effort, is not something I would recommend with the bike provision in its current state...

I suppose we'll have to wait until they build some new piece of transport infrastructure linking to the airport as that would be the ideal opportunity to build a cycle lane alongside.

Bit strange that it actually displays the Sustrans site before saying it's not available.

I tried using that screen thing 3 or 4 years back. Didn't work. Returning from cycling hol, thought to cycle home to central Edinburgh without planning route two weeks ahead.

The lady at the info desk was no help, mainly there to explain that she never lets her husband cycle on the roads, too dangerous.

@gkgk - that's fantastic advice…. a bit like "well if you wanted to get there, I wouldn't have started from here"...
