    Hello,
I am thinking of starting to cycle to work.
I live in comely bank and would be commuting to rbs at gogarburn.
I would prefer to stay away from cars, buses etc. , I wouldn't mind if the route is busy with other cyclists and pedestrians.
Any suggestions will be welcome - I am completely new at cycling in Edinburgh, so don't know any routes as if now.
    I appreciate the help, thanks.

    Hello schadha84

You can take the Water of leith Path which starts for you at the actual bridge in Stockbridge, head west along the dead end road and join the path. Annoyingly, there is a detour due to a landslide which has been imposed for so long that the walkers and joggers are ignoring but you won't get a bike over the barriers. However, the detour is not terrible and quite well signposted. Back on the WoL path you get to roseburn via the gallery of modern art. From there skirt murrayfield, round to saughton park, take the nice newish path through the park, cross A71 at bike lights, take path round behind saughton jail, round to water of leith visitor centre up the bike chute there onto canal, canal out to hermiston/Heriot watt then down to gogarburn.

Only the last stretch has any cars going beside you. Quite a circuitous route as follows the river and then the canal which is a contour canal. Will also contain mud so better during dry spells. But no steep hill except the bike chute.

    Go for it

    Welcome schadha84.

Assuming you are more Comely Bank than Stockbridge, this would probably suit you better as far as Roseburn Park -

I think this is what Gembo suggests for the rest -

    Total about 10 miles.

Point to point CS suggests various options about 6 miles - though they involve more distance on roads.

    Others will suggest other options.

This is a route that uses the notorious Broomhouse cyclepath (too many signalised crossings) -

Pretty flat, but does end with GSR -

@greenroofer will give you chapter and verse on routes. His recommendation will in all liklihood be correct (unless he directs you into a nettle-filled underpass). I, on the other hand, will suggest people to look out for on the canal towpath, which has a thriving community of regulars and erratics.

also has a thriving community of erratic regulars but do not let that put you off
