Bus lanes to change

    The peak-only ETRO didn't actually change the status quo. It just made driving in a bus lane between the peaks allowed, a meaningless technicality because you could always park most of them anyway.

    It was a politically clever do-nothing manoeuvre and the fact Calder Rd (one of the few previously all day no stopping lanes) is being considered for exception to the new old rule is testament to that.

    Seems like the message that bus lanes have been scrapped is getting through to drivists. The bus lane on Lindsay Road was solid with queuing traffic on the approach to the Commercial Street junction at 9am this morning.

    Can't quite remember. What's the script with Rabbie's Trailburners (or their ilk) using Princes Street / bus lanes. I think the latter are OK as they've got enough seats, but I thought West Maitland Street is "local buses only", which they certainly aren't (or is that the westbound section after Torphicen Street only?).

    Anyway I'm getting a bit sick of their aggressive belligerence.

    Any vehicle with 8 or more passenger seats is allowed unless the signs specify local buses only.

    West Maitland St one of the few that says local buses only.

    Westbound from the tram stop through Atholl Place and onto W Maitland Street it's all local buses/trams only until Haymarket.

    Eastbound it's trams only until Atholl Place when it becomes normal bus lane restrictions (but 24hr.)

  13. There's not even a need to remember bus lane times on the Shore (one of the top 5). Those caught aren't ignoring Bus Lane times, they're blatantly ignoring No Entry / One Way / No (Left/Right) Turn signs.

    It's two way for buses and bikes and one-way for other traffic. Coming from Henderson Street, you have to drive through very large No Entry signs, plus signs for Buses and Cycles Only, plus signs for the Bus Lane Camera, plus the words BUSES AND CYCLES ONLY painted in HUGE letters on the road.

    If you're coming off Sandport bridge, there are signs for No Left Turn, plus it's painted in big letters on the road.

    Coming off Burgess St, there are No Right Turn signs for everything except bikes.

    Those caught on the Shore have absolutely no excuse. The Bus Lane Camera was installed after a couple of years of complaints from residents fed-up with selfish drivers ignoring the signs.

    Amazing what a difference a change of wording can make:

    Little France Drive, near Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, was the hotspot, with 8049 separate incidents of drivers breaking the law recorded in 2016 – costing them a total of £196,000, or roughly £25 for each offence.

    The chipwrapper makes it sound as if the problem is the council handing out tickets and raking in the cash, rather than people being fined fairly paltry amounts for driving their cars illegally.

    Obviously this is about more than bus lanes, but -

    Traffic congestion in the Capital threatens the reliability of the city’s bus services, according to the managing director of Lothian Buses.

    Richard Hall told the Evening News that increasing congestion is turning ­customers away from using bus services as the company announced improvements and new routes ahead of the ­reopening of Leith Street, which has been closed since September 2017.

    Department for Transport statistics show that there has been a 5.8 per cent decrease in bus use since the same period last year, with the city’s nose-to-tail traffic thought to be at fault.

    Don't know if "subject to public consultation" mantra is always a good idea. Certain good ideas, although ultimately beneficial, may never get off the ground unless railroaded through. The bus lane proposal is one of these IMO.
