    "

TWO new platforms will replace the former taxi rank at Waverley station in Edinburgh to help cater for an expected doubling of passengers over the next ten years, Network Rail announced today.

The cynic in me says the palarva over the vehicle access was all engineered to free up space for these new platforms.

@Steveo indeed! Now why didn't they just say that all along rather than all this nonsense and obfuscation about terrorist threats and being out of "absolutely no vehicles on the concourse {except Network Rail, British Transport Police, Staff, Supplier, Contractor etc. vehicles) policy.

Well as they are anticipating a doubling of passenger numbers, there surely is an even stronger case for widening the walkways on the ramps into the severely underused road space.
I can't understand why they need two road ramps now to support access for a handful of vehicles a day. Why dont they just open up one ramp for mixed pedestrian/cyclist access? And protect the other for the few deliveries a week that needs it. That would be far nicer and welcoming than all the barriers and guards currently being used to protect underused space.
The management of the whole ramp thing just creates a very hostile atmosphere and really is not good in a customer focussed environment.

I was in Waverley this afternoon picking up tickets.

I have to say that the bike parking was absolutely chokka. Technically there were some free spaces, but the toaster rack style Sheffield stands are placed too close together, making it next to impossible to slot bikes in side by side. A very tight squeeze. I noted quite a few (presumably abandoned) bikes with notices attached warning of imminent removal. I suppose someine checks the stands regularly.

Is it just me, or have they removed one of the double decker bike parking racks? The one that's there is completely full every time I'm in the station.

As I wondered past the rather glum looking Friday market stall holders waiting for their passing trade I did wonder if, instead of occasional sales of artisan bread, gourmet burgers and assorted crafty and cultural artefacts for sale, that big space could not be better used for bike parking?

    "The one that's there"

If there's not another one there besides that one then there is one less than there was in mid-April.

What do you bet they've moved it up to the other end, rather Han getting new/extra ones?

Given that there have been 4 (or possibly 6 - depends on whether you count stabling spur/loco siding arrangements for Fort Bill sleeper vehicles &c between 01.30 and 03.30 as a platform still in use) platforms at the East End now lifted and some built over.....

East end has those platforms to reclaim if they want more, but with the bottleneck of just 2 tracks through Calton Tunnels, where there were 4, and potentially more trains coming in from another line feeding the East side, will the 4-tracks need restoration, with the Abbeyhill loop restored, to move empties to & from the depot.
