I was thinking of taking usual route to the innocent tunnel then traversing the broken glass of bingham crossing the railway line and swinging down to the Sustrans route. Gets a bit hazy after that as I am normally heading for Whitecraigs that way. Or should I cross the railway then take the main road round. Any tips?

Starting from Brunstane - This is not efficient but if you have time it's quite pleasant -

you can actually head off the bank of the Esk here (although it's not marked as a path on the map)

and head up to Inveresk Village Road there… I'm not sure if you can get to the school from the Church or not - you may have to go down the road...

A quicker off-road and back-road route: From Brunstane Station take the Brunstane Burn path to Newhailes Estate. Through the estate and straight across at the roundabout. Cut through the industrial estate to the Stoneyhill path. Then down into Musselburgh following the NCN signs.

Thanks for suggestions. On calculating the time and distance I think It best to do the last bit on the road.
