The record dates back to 1876 and once carried immense prestige because of the greats who had attacked it over the years, including Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx and Miguel Indurain. It fell out of favour after a UCI ruling in 2000 that limited aerodynamic aids to those available to Merckx, and which removed from the record books distances set by Chris Boardman, Indurain, Francesco Moser and Graeme Obree. The new rules on aerodynamics – permitting anything that is currently allowed on the track – open the way for a bid by big names such as Wiggins and Cancellara, who also has his eyes on it.

Whole family huddled around the laptop. Visiting child bemused.

Shaved it off to reduce drag?

News report this morning had the shave and haircut being recommended by his team indeed to reduce drag...

No idea how serious the suggestion was, but the newsreader delivered it straight!

I imagine it was more to do with overheating. But it's an incremental gains thing I guess.

I think as well that it makes you "feel" faster if you take these big preparative moves.

A friend of mine shaved his legs and told me secretively " I know it doesn't make any actual difference - but I FEEL faster"

i saw something where he said the team had 'talked him into it' , so unless it was a big windup, sounds like it was serious.

also great line about how he went into the barber and got asked 'anything on today?' 'nope'

Best line I've seen so far has been this, from the Guardian:

Asked how he would celebrate, Wiggins was succinct: “Standing up.”

Cycling weekly said: "Rather than collapsing after his ride, Wiggins did several laps of the velodrome, walked around and spoke to the press and well wishers. His team had even managed to rustle up a jersey within minutes emblazoned with his record in gold."

This is an amazing result with such a margin. 33.88 miles in an hour in old money.
In the 'classic' world of UCI his bike is / will of course be better than those gone before. His prep would be meticulous and his team were confident. Even so...

As you know, the amount of energy spent pushing air out of the way is massive over an hour. To compare, non-UCI human powered machines surpassed this record in the 1980s. Of course as faired super-reclined machines these are only bicycles in the sense they have two wheels! Current non-UCI record is over 90km in one hour.

This takes nothing away from those athletes that can 'redline' power at this level. Few cross from the UCI to the IHPVA formats. Mr Obree is one though that's willing to continue looking for challenges it seems.

It's interesting that Sir Bradley feels that the times on this format of cycling may have more or less 'maxxed'.

In a way the idea of UCI approved cycling is that 'it's not about the bike'. Yet people have continued increasing speed in all pedal powered formats. Logically you'd expect the increases to be smaller yet this one was quite a jump up.

"this one was quite a jump up"

And he made it look 'easy' and clearly didn't give it 'all he'd got'!

Presumably he could do it all again next week - or next year if anyone else beats his time.

One thing there was 'concern' about was "the weather" (yeah indoors) - high pressure.

(From above) "As you know, the amount of energy spent pushing air out of the way is massive over an hour."

I like sir wiggo' jumper but the t shirt is not so good. He also suits haircut and no beard, looks years younger. Good to see him pushing interviewer and organisers out the way to embrace Big Mig, a man whose lungs were the size of two hot air balloons
