A few years ago I crashed en route to Viewforth from Lochrin Place, thanks to the near invisible grey chain between 2 posts, injuring my right thumb, and witnessed by a fellow cyclist.

Now this has highlighted the potential for liability in poor placement and hazard marking of bollards and access restrictions. Note the post crash use of traffic cones.

I am always amazed in this age of Hi-Vis hysteria when bollards are installed in black. Chain or string hanging between is even more ridiculous.

A further Edinburgh location is going west along Ocean Drive and heading for Commercial St.

http://goo.gl/maps/lpsqf has an inviting dropped kerb, cross this and drop down off the raised section to railway level and aim along the bridge between the tracks...and then .....the chain: http://goo.gl/maps/o93fF which is newly sporting warning signs in the picture, but did not originally have them.

If not on a public road (like the road on a level crossing) the legislation of the Health & Safety at Work Act can make this a section 3 detail if a non employee on the site is injured by a failure to provide an appropriate duty of care concerning hazards.
