Will it fit my rims?

So after today's leaf jam skid and other hairy moments, I'd like embrace Autumn by swapping out my minimal tread 28mm Vittoria Rubinos for something 'treadier'. However, I'm a little concerned that even 28mm rubber is beyond what my rims can handle.

I have Mach 1 CFX rims at the moment. They've taken a little 'persuasion' to accept the 28mm Rubinos, but ran fine with a 28mm Conti Gatorskin and a SuperSport Plus (both pretty tight tyres I grant you). According to the label, the rims are 622 x 13. I'm looking to run something between 28mm and 33mm.

Received wisdom (Sheldon Brown, Schwalbe Technical Info) suggests I can go down to fag-packet thin 18mm tyres and up to 25mm rubber. Anything over that is uncertain/'this way disaster lies' territory.

Reading around the interwebs, I've found people saying wider tyres will/won't work.

Any experience of getting this to work, or should I be sticking my CFX wheels on eBay and starting over?

I banged a pair of 28mm or maybe 32mm on my Open Pros to get a CX style winter path ready all rounder. All went well until I went down Bangly Brae and the wheel/tyre mismatch caused a speed wobble. Open Pros have pressure ratings on them for tyres 19-28mm.

    Hmmm, food for thought.

I have some 700x33 CX tyres, not good for everyday commuting, but I'll try them on the CFX rim and see what's what...

    Thanks guys.

DaveC- How do you find the CFX wheels handle CX duty? Marketing blurb about the Tru-Build Range of wheels sort of implies these are hand-made (in Raleigh's Nottingham factory). I guess the truth is otherwise...

Mach 1 recommend 18-28mm tyres for CFX rims. With oversize tyres the hardest bit is often getting them on the rims but unlike undersized tyres there's no risk of them coming off unexpectedly. The tyre profile will be different to the manufacturer's intended which can very occasionally cause peculiar handling.

Sorry Mandopicker1,I don't have CFX wheels, but Alex rims. I use my bike for winter commutes and take it off road through the Dalmeny estate and on roads/paths from Fife to Edinburgh. I have experienced rear end slide with Marathon tyres on gravel, but the winter CX and Studded tyres handle the wet leaves and loose surface well. I have some CX tyres which came with the bike but they are wafer thin so I have not used them for much in the last few years. My winter tyres are Schwalbe Snow tyres, two sets of studs instead of 4 as per the ice tyres. They handle the tarmac well and the rough stuff too. I have never experienced tyre wobble with over sized tyres but if they puncture, they are a PITA the get back on the rim as they are want to pop off the other side of the rim.

Well it looks like it's going to work.

The new front CFX wheel is bought (£40...) and 33mm Maxxis Raze cross tyre fitted. All seems ok so far. LBS even fitted the rim tape and swapped the tyre for me. The sound of silence is sweet.

Had hoped to take the crosser for a spin today, but tomorrow the young 'un and I are going bramble picking 'en velo' along the Carberry - Saltoun cycle path.

Just back from a spin with the young 'un down the old Saltoun railway path. All worked well on less than smooth track, so nothing to worry about.

Young 'un managed a creditable run out to Ormiston and back, with enough in the tank to 'sprint' to the finish line (aka the carpark).

    Thanks all for your thoughts.
