Its that time again, I need new lighting gear. Does anyone need anything from Rose? I'm hoping to order a new light in the next few days.

Quick FYI (although I'm sure everyone knows already): dynamo spade connectors and wiring heatshrink can be had cheaply from the car wiring section of Halfords.

Steveo: can you add this in?

I'm due over in Edinburgh at some point to collect a back from fimm, so could grab this at the same time. Happy to transfer cash in advance

    Done.

I'll get a small supply of the dynamo connectors as they're relatively hard to come by.

Not quite as elegant as what came with the SON in the first place, but have been working solidly enough for the past year.

    And thanks

I'm not sure they'd work with the Shimano connector it seems to be a little proprietary (surprise!).

They're cheap and handy so not a big deal to have a small stock.

Put me down for a Shimano dynamo connector plug thing too. I think I still owe Uberuce for one (and the concomitant postal fraction) but more plugs = more modding ops.

Wonderful, something disconnected between paypal and rose. I'm now not sure if my card has been charged or not and Rose shows no sign of my order...

PM's inbound chaps. Prices are slightly higher due to dodgy exchange rate offered by Paypal, I'm still convinced its better than the one offered by my credit card. Though nothing like as good as the one Rose advertise.

    Anyone else?

Can I have a deadline for my homework? I definitely want to get a dynolamp from them, but aren't sure what hub I want yet.

Reasonably pronto, but can wait for you to decide. Although surely it's a case of:

    - Can I afford a SON?
    - If yes: SON!
    - If no: pick most expensive Shimano I can afford.
    - Bask in glory of a job well done.

I won't be in Edinburgh until the 31st, if that affects your decision.

Should probably have mentioned that first...

That is a little on the long side. I'll bite the seven'n'sixpence and get it sent here, but ta for the offerising.

Why are SON dynamos worth £170 when the most expensive Shimano is £100 cheaper?

A thought that crossed my mind when I ordered a Shimano XT dynohub from Rose for iirc less than £50. Yes the SON has *slightly* less resistance than the Shimano according to some test figures I found somewhere whilst googling, but £170? Really?

I'm assuming reliability comes into it. And no doubt a bit of brand, and a bit less efficiency through bulk construction.

I've got a SON on the MetaBike, but I've just ordered a £30 Shinamo special for the iron horse upright. From what I've seen, the drag with the light on is very close across the board.

One of the things potentially going for the SON is that they have a special pressure compensating system to prevent damp air being drawn into the hub when going from a warm environment to a cold environment (i.e. taking your bike out of the house in the dark!).

That might well impact on the longevity in Scotland.

However I got my SON for the Brompton as it was the lighter option, and the Brompton is the bike I lift most...
