As a regular user of Garmin Connect for all my logging needs, I was pleased to hear last month that Strava will copy over my activities automatically.

However, in looking at my Strava updates it seems to be breaking up the activites into segments (not segments in a Strava sense though) which are under a mile long and missing out parts, even though it's a continious journey in Garmin Connect.

Is anyone else who uses this feature having similar problems or has a fix to make it copy the whole journey? Example below

Todays communte on Garmin Connect = 4.9 miles
    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/598398703

Todays commute on strava = 0.9 miles

    Any ideas anyone?

Mine doesn't do that. What device are you using?

    @amir

For day to day cycling I use the Garmin Fit app on a Galaxy S5.

When I'm actually out "training" I use a Garmin Forerunner 910XT which now you've pointed it out seems to work correctly and records the whole ride.

And after a bit of googling (despite I've spent HOURS googling for an answer, I found the following on the Strava support forums

"Garmin Fit mobile app: I've tested this on Strava, and from what I can tell from initial testing there is again a formatting problem with the files which prevents Strava from reading them correctly. It is possible that Strava cannot read the files at all, or sometimes will read just a tiny part of the recording. When I export the TCX from Garmin Connect for a Garmin Fit mobile app recording, the data loads correctly on Strava when uploaded manually from file.

While we continue to investigate any issues with the file formatting, I recommend that using the export TCX workaround from Garmin Connect."

    Bum.

Are you trying to copy all historic activities from GC to Strava? I ask because I had an entirely different response typed out, then realised I may have misunderstood what you're trying to do.

@Kenny. No, just my current ones. I think I need to start using Strava to record, but IIRC the syncing only goes FROM Connect TO Strava, and not the other way, so I'd then need to upload manually, which defeats the purpose.

    Unless you have any ideas?

Well, what I do is upload to GC using Garmin Express, and I have linked both my Strava and Endomondo accounts to GC such that I only have to plug my Garmin Edge into my computer, and the activities all upload to the three sites automatically.

I also have a 910xt, which I suspect will do the exact same thing, since it also uploads through Garmin Express.

I don't, however, have any clues about when you're using an app on a phone, I'm afraid. However, assuming that it looks like a Garmin app, and I believe it's actually GC that copies my activities over to Strava / Endomondo and not Garmin Express, it might work. I can try it out easily enough; I will almost certainly have to go pick a child up from somewhere this evening (if not countless children (ok, I only have 3)). I'll let you know what happens.

Hmm. Well, I tried it, and it copied successfully to Endomondo, and it tried to copy it to Strava but only the end point made it over. Yeah, no start point, no distance, no speed, nothing but and end point. Pointless (sic).

I will try again, although tbh I don't think I did anything wrong in the first attempt. It's like it tried but failed. Googling didn't come up with anything inspiring. But as I say, I'll give it another go sometime and see what happens.

Tried it again, and again it didn't copy across to Strava. Didn't copy anything this time, no activity at all. Endomondo copied across fine. Odd. Both activities are "walking", so if I try it again, I will set it to "running" to see if that helps. But confidence in this functionality is not high.

@ Kenny, Thanks for trying. I suspect that it's an issue with the way the official Gamin app records the data, in a format which Strava doesn't like. When using my 910XT it also comes across fine, but I'm not going to use that for the daily commute as I need to be out the door quick and can't wait 5 minutes for the 910 to connect.

Are you aware of any method to automatically sync TO Garmin Connect, maybe from something like Endomondo or Strava itself? I know Tapiriik can do that but it's a manual process and I'd like something automated?

@condor2378 - no worries. I tried it with a "running" activity last night (I was walking, but that doesn't really matter), and it still didn't work. Looks like Garmin Fit doesn't play well with this new Garmin feature.

I'm afraid I don't know of an automatic way to copy it across. Up until 2 weeks ago, I uploaded all my activities manually to each site. I was putting up with the manual process, and had done so for years. Endomondo finally caught up and allowed auto-syncing so I set that up as well as with Strava, so now I don't have to do almost anything. It's bliss.
