Road helmets with removable straps?

  1. My current road helmet (Bell Alchera) is over 6 years old and the straps are manky. They reek and have stiff, crusty patches on them where the combination of sweat, muck and shed skin have combined.

I'm on the hunt for a new lid with straps which can easily be removed for cleaning, much like the removable padding in most helmets.

Can anyone recommend a decent, well-ventilated helmet that has such a thing?

You could maybe wash the whole helmet in a bucket/basin/bathtub if the straps don't come off? Shame to ditch it just because it's encrusted with filth.

If we can leave the helmet debate to the helmet debate thread, I believe the recommendation on any helmet which is over 3 years old is to replace it, irrespective of whether it has been involved in an accident, as after 3 years, it is merely a plastic hat.

Muc Off do a foaming helmet cleaner which is safe on the materials and works quite well without the need to rinse but I'd agree - at that age its time to replace it

  5. Thanks guys. Good excuse for a new helmet :-) I didn't realise that the effectiveness had gone after such a short period (although I'm under no illusions as to the effectiveness of some polystyrene if I hit my head on something at >12mph)

Saved my head at 28mph last week. Had concussion for a few days but my head stayed in one piece and the helmet was badly crushed instead
