you've got just the right level of madness to deserve your badge

Actually @amir I'm not mad enough - have decided to limit myself to the Deeside Loop tomorrow and forget about the overnight ECE. Heavy rain forecast between 6pm and midnight, presumably being deposited from the cloud of doom that is stalking me and scuppering my attempt at a SR this year. Ah well, it's only a badge...

For those who haven't done an audax (yet?)

Who wants to tell me about Audax?

I completely forgot about the Deeside Loop, again. Deeply annoying since my Dad lives about a mile from the start point and I was up in Tayside this weekend anyway, albiet at my sister's in Monifeith.

Looks like they've got a fine clear day for it today; good luck, folks!

Great day out yesterday in fine weather. Bit of a headwind up Deeside and the Cairnwell, but compensated by the lovely taily all the way back from Glen Isla. Superb route - highly scenic from start to finish. As Cairn o'Mount virgin I can safely say it's a tough old climb, but very rewarding.

@amir and @cyclingmollie: sorry I didn't get the chance to catch up with you properly - I discovered 1km after the start that I didn't have my brevet card, so went back for it - had dropped it by my bike at the start. Meant that Steve and I were at the coo's tail all day, not helped by our frequent café stops!

Yes, it was a great day out @panyagua. The entire route was fresh cycling ground for me and Cairn o'Mount is just as bad as you suggest. It was all a bit McIntoch Patrick before that. @amir and I stopped for lunch in Ballater which was nice and we were welcomed into Braemar by a pipe band. The devil's horns gradient profile suggests the Cairnwell is as bad as the Cairn o'Mount but we found the endless gradual rising climb into the wind through the forests of Deeside much worse. Until Glen Isla I was sure the organiser could have improved the ride by running it in the opposite direction but the people pushing bikes up the Cairnwell from the south and wind assisted ride down to Kirriemuir through Glen Isla changed my mind.

It was a good ride. But it felt tougher than I hoped it would so I am hoping that the next week or so will help to build my confidence for the National 400 on 25 July.

All packed up and ready for the national 400 tomorrow... although the forecast is all over the place so I've pretty much got every variation of kit in the back of the car!

Quite excited as it's all new roads for me.

Hoping my fitness will be ok, as I haven't ridden any brevets since the Southern Uplands in 2014. I'm much, much less fit than I was this time last year anyway :(

See some of you at the Dingwall campsite tonight maybe? I'm not camping, but apparently it's the place to be.

    Eh?

So you're still alive Dave? I can almost walk normally now though not without pain. That was a splendid fantastic wonderful ride. The north coast is well recommended for cycling though probably easier without 100 miles under the belt. Very steep shockers to violate the legs every so often. The flow country is nice in the dark.

I was wondering how many kipped at Kildonan or Lairg and how many took the hilly shortcut by Helmsdale.

Adrian, glad you loved it. One of my best Audaxes. I went up the bonkers hill from Kildonan and actually thought it was wonderful, both up and down. Mountain biking experience definitely helped! I'd got into Kildonan very cold and tired but was well revived by the fantastic control. No kip, though well tempted.

The only bit that felt like a slog was the last slow climb before Dingwall.

Brand new for 2015 the Etape Royale is a closed-road cycle sportive set in the regal surroundings of Scotland’s majestic North-East.

The 65 or 100-mile, closed-road route takes cyclists across Aberdeenshire and Moray’s breath-taking scenery, through the heart of whisky country and Royal Deeside.

PBPing for me and a few others frmo this parish this weekend. Fri I'm on the 06:30 train to KX and then the afternoon Eurostar before cycling the last 40km to the 'oh tel'.

I think I have got everything, money, haircut, tickets, passport pix, bike.....

Just got to locate my GPS (for recording not navigation) and I'm there. Getting excited now.

Good luck - I'm sure you'll love every minute of it (in retrospect).

Just remember not to get too carried away with the distance you ride before sleeping. I rode to Brest before I got my head down but it took me so long to crawl the last leg, should have stopped in Carhaix...

Best of luck. Hope you enjoy some of it at least...

Explored a lot of the area between Carhaix and Brest (covering both outward and return route) last month- the main hill is reasonably graded but the thought of cycling it twice after 550-650km is not a pleasant one. Rather you than me...

I was in good shape three weeks ago, but I'm presenting new research work at a conference straight after PBP, so there has been very little cycling since. Uh oh!
