When people "get caught" out later than they intended with no lights (or as late as they intended but they didn't appreciate that the sun had gone to bed earlier than previously).

Anyway, spotted out of my front window a couple of young touristy looking types on BSOs getting a talking to by the police who were in an unmarked high-power Audi on London Road the other night well after the "lighting up" hour. Looked like they were given a lecture and told to push home.

There appeared to be quite a few polices around in patrol cars also. I assume that they were out trying to nab some of the obnoxious boy/man racers who use London Road between Jocks Lodge and Abbeyhill and also Marionville Road between Meadowbank and Lochend as a late night race track / "listen to how loud I can rev my engine and make it backfire" track.

I bet the very same polis 'turn a blind eye' to all the cars with one headlight out.

Pick on the pootlists - easy target

I was out last Tuesday night and did notice a lot of cyclists out without lights (and some with the baffling either rear or front but not both option).

Spotted one of the 'any port in a storm' brigade the other night with a red front light and no rear. Not sure what he hoped to achieve.

That said I've cycled home in the dark having forgotten to turn on my front light and it made to difference at all to how drivers behaved.

It's the same police that charged the driver who hit me recently. Two vehicles responded very quickly - a black high power vehicle with white 'Police' down the side and two occupants in suits (detectives?) and a traffic car soon after.

They've been excellent throughout the process and I'd be quite happy if they pointed out lighting issues to cyclists given the recent spate of accidents.

Lots more of the police seem to be cycling to and from work - Torphichen station is full of bikes and there are lots of cyclists at Drylaw (both have dealt with the stolen motorbikes on cycle paths issues). The traffic team appears to have quite a few keen cyclists too.
