I've had an admittedly minor issue for about the last 3 months with my chain skipping past the second largest cog on the rear block, otherwise indexed properly.

I had put it down to needing a new chain / cassette as the chain wear tool has definitely been saying *replace* since about then. Finally got round to replacing chain and cassette at the weekend, and guess what? Yep, still skipping a gear on way down block.

The rear mech was new on in May, so I don't think it could be that (or maybe a faulty one), only other option I can think of is that it's the shifter that's causing the issue?

    Any ideas CCEpedia?

Aside from the shifter, it's possible the cable is not moving freely at some point along its path. If it passes under the bottom bracket, check the little plastic guide for wear. However, it's surprising that it's only one gear affected.

Bent hanger? Otherwise it could be just a case of adjusting it until its running correctly.

Try giving the mech a good clean and oil the pivot points in case there's something in there which is enough to counter the spring/cable tensions and stop the arm shifting the chain across to the correct position.

Also a kink in the cable or housing might explain it.

Yep, you'll have to try all above suggestions.

Assuming the same number of cogs as the lever (otherwise indexing will always be hit or miss) it's sometimes possible to be one cog/click out.

Other options include rear hub that needs tightening, or loose cassette lockring.

The most difficult to sort is a slightly bent/twisted hanger which 'looks' fine but can be enough to cause your problem.

  6. Change the cable & outer. Sometimes they've become so gunked up inside the cable housing that the cable gets a bit sticky. (This has resolved a similar issue to yours for me in the past).

Hmm, mech, and cables were only weeks old (and during summer) when this issue started appearing, so probably unlikely it's either of those (I'll check though). I do wonder about the rear mech though, it always felt 'light', even from new, not like any rear mech I've used before.

The (steel) hanger is a possibility, but again the frame was only weeks old when this started happening, and I'm not aware of having given it a 'dun't at any time?

The suggestion that may be most likely is a hub issue. When I built the wheel the threaded bit of the hub which takes the lockring had a small chip out of it (I should have taken it back but was impatient to build the wheel). That chip has extended to more of the threaded bit breaking off every time the cassette is removed for any reason, to the extent that there is now about 2 or 3mm less depth of thread on the hub than there was originally.

However, the lockring does 'seem' to be on tightly, and there is no play in any of the sprockets. I think I'll swap the wheel over with an old one to see if the problem disappears. At least it's a cheap hub....
