"my cycle ride took 60 mins instead of 40. I was pretty cheesed off with all the cyclists jumping on pavements and crossign red lights and worried about the wobbly newcomers after about a mile so i just relaxed and sat back to enjoy the sun. still i wouldn't cycle to work if it was like that everyday.

i would suggest to anyone planning on cycling to work on strike days that they get a bit of practise on non-strike days first. it was a pretty difficult journey for anyone."

"To the lycra clad road cyclist who felt the need to make a sarcastic comment about me only cycling in because of the strike: I have been cycling to work at least 3 days a week since March, you sexist wanker! Girls can commute by bike too, you know!"

    Have read the entire page:

"I Woke up at 7:15 (1 hour later than usual) and my girlfriend is already in a foul mood because of the tube strike... She spends the morning sighing and rolling her eyes at me so I try and stay out of the way.. The kittens don't understand and they are getting in the way as usual but they get fed at the normal time and they settle down in the bedroom to get some much-needed shut eye (awwwww)... Meanwhile I make my coffee and my peanut butter on toast and switch on my laptop and get to work at the normal time...
It was pretty hairy for a moment though...."

    Interesting reading
"And cyclists experience roughly the same fatality risk per kilometre travelled as pedestrians."

"I have written about the red lights issue before, and you can find a link to a research paper indicating it is safer to jump red lights than to obey them, published by TfL on my blog: http://willcycle.blogspot.com/2010/06/red-lights-re-visited.html.

The sooner people realise that traffic lights were invented to keep motorised traffic from jamming up the better. As far as I'm concerned, they don't apply to me, but of course I won't simply blindly ride through on red."

I used to work on Campden Hill Rd, Kensington. It's not big but the north side is steep in places.

    Constitution hill is just redongculous.

We'll have to politely agree to disagree on that one, I may agree or disagree that they *shouldn't* apply to cyclists but I *know* that they legally do and to jump them is illegal.

So imho, (and only my opinion as a random bod posting on the internet, before anyone gets excited ( ;-) )) anyone jumping red lights because they disagree with that law has no place criticising car drivers who speed/jump lights/overtake too close because they believe that the laws in question shouldn't apply to them.
rules are made for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools, (as the saying goes), laws, whether the ass variety or not, apply to us all and are not optional.

    spitfire,

And that risk is calculated for people on bikes. That includes kids and guys who were out on their bike in the park a couple of years ago then decided to get it out of the shed.

Then there are people who ride a bike every day, people who know the little signs to look for in car behaviour, people who are confident about their road positioning. They're not invulnerable but they will have a lower risk/km.
