@kaputnik: I go west to east in the morning and reverse in the evening.

In which case if you pass a dark blue steel-frame bike with yellow-taped moustache bars and an always-on dynamo front light and a single yellow pannier on the right hand side, that's probably me. My magic plastic hat is white and has a chequerboard reflective band around it. It often has a cap underneath it, which may have a white or yellow or black peak. My coat is either yellow if it's not raining (black on front) or if it's raining black (also black on front).

    That's pretty distinctive. We've not passed.....yet.

The moustache bars are new, we may have passed when it had (yellow-taped) drops and when I was in my summer plumage (grey t-shirt)

There's one dog-controller I see regularly on the NEPN on both commute-halves who notices cyclists in advance, retrieves his short-leashed dog and stands on the grass at the edge of the tarmac until the cyclist has passed. I've never seen anyone else nod/thank at him for this.

Wingpig: I did this when I had my short time with the rescue dog.

I also do it when looking after my brother's dogs. Uberuce said thanks as he went past.

The surprise I observe from similar dog controllers upon receiving my thanks suggests that it's a very rare occurrence.

"suggests that it's a very rare occurrence"

I do when it's clear that it's being done for mutual benefit, but there are times when dog minders seems to be glaring at cyclists for 'making' them do it.

My experience is about 50-50 for people saying thanks. Probably the same proportion as people saying thanks when I hold a door open for them, for example.

Although once in London I shut the door I was holding open in someone's face after the 10th person in their group walked through without saying thanks. I'm polite, but everyone has their limits. And a few days in London had left me frazzled.

Dog owners on the Kirkliston -Newbridge old railway line are almost always courteous, forward thinking and a pleasure to share paths with. They always get a cheery greeting and thanks from me.

The only time I had a problem was just N of Kirkliston on that line, heading for Dalmeny when an out of control dog chased me for some time.

Similar with owners on the Fife coast path, but due to blind corners we can sometimes surprise each other. At least in winter the beam of my light will be a help...

I ride the Kirkliston - Newbridge path almost every morning and they are great on that path. I meet a group of dog walkers at the same time every moning. (Can set watch by them) and thay always gather up their dogs when they see me approach and say "Good Morning". I always slow and am equally polite in return.

I did have one incident at the other side of Newbridge on the way home one night, where I admit I should have slowed a bit more, but was also trying to avoid some glass on the right hand side of the road/ path.
