In order to only need one car to get there, I have selflessly offered to propel myself. Cyclestreet's fastest says the A71, with the canal and Livingston's paths as the quietest. Any favourite or advised alternatives?

Not a fan of the a71, for cycling on. Today also will be into strong wind on way out.

I suggest canal to hermiston, through Heriot watt out the west gate along the long Dalmahoy road to the back road to Kirknewton, then from there East calder, mid calder to the lizzie Brice roundabout of livingston, straight over then through murieston. In murieston there is an long slow clockwise gradual climb up through the suburb until the top of the hill when there is a left turn to a country road to harburn, after about 150 yards on this road take a right and this takes you to Harburn. Proceed to the main road down to west calder then take right down to west Calder and from there to the zoo? Might be tempted to take train to west Calder and cycle back?

Yep, I'd go with that. If you are happy on road, then I would come back on A70. It's mostly quiet. The A71 is a horrible place to be on a bike.

If you wan't to stay on paths, I might be inclined to cycle through Livingston (Loan Path), and pick up the path from Dechmont to Edinburgh. It only takes about 15 - 20 mins to get to Dechmont through Livingston, and with a strong Westerly the path past Broxburn and Newbridge is fast.

More Scenic alternative to follow route 75 through Almodell country park, but then head up through the lanes and join the canal just before Broxburn. Canal path surface not too great until Ratho though, but certainly doable (I've done it on 23mm gatorskins)

I was just about to suggest long Dalmahoy road to Kirknewton- I've always really enjoyed it - it took me ages to make it through Livingstone without getting lost. I used to cycle through the Calders and Livingstone to get to Shotts a lot. I like gembo's route suggestion and will try and remember it...

Went today but didn't have enough time to bike there, so drove. I've been back via the Almond a few times but would probably have headed put through Broxburn and as far west across the top of Livingston as the shared off-road path goes.

Indeed, what could be a more natural home for some animals that might be more naturally inclined to roam some acres of tundra hunting antelopes, gazelles or zebra. Really, Belgian zoo or West Lothian? Frying pan or fire?

Insto think of it more like a long term psychiatric facility for animals. They have already taken other rescue animals. ThT bit of west lothian is more taiga than tundra.
