Are we any closer to actually agreeing something - I mean a visit to the pub, not the most middle class pub name?

I'll turf up at the Kale and Quinoa whenever. Happy to go with the flow.

The Ironic Cufflink? The Boden Scarf? The Thwarted Ambition? The Pilates Arms?

I'm sure Gembo said that the reason people in Balerno can't have nice cafés is that people in Balerno are too middle class to go to them and would sooner stay in their own houses drinking coffee. I wonder if that extends to upmarket boozers?"]

There is 2 decidedly down market pubs in Balerno. With many ostentatious houses in Balerno, can only imagine people go in to town or something.

Can not get a drink in balerno after 11 pm on weekdays.

The first time I had a pint in Balerno was with a young lady in the Maleny Arms. We'd walked through the Pentlands from Flotterstone.

Old guy started ranting about outside toilets and how young students had it all on a plate. Then he fell in the fire because he was miroculous. We fished him out and as we were brushing him down his son came over and asked why we'd pushed his dad in the fire.

Never been back, though do like the Grey Horse down the road. Got talking to slightly intense recently released con the last time I was in there.

    Let's not go to Balerno.

The "Volvo and Brompton" is amusing, but I think Wee Folding Bike might resent the implication that these are badges of the middle class?

Volvos are a simple sign of impeccable taste (coupled with a possible desire to have a car you can comfortably sleep in, should the need arise).

    @kaputnik - Oi! I resemble that comment.

So, to pander to my outing as middle class (as if that's a shock to anyone), wasn't there talk of morning (overpriced) coffee instead of beer?

WFB is not the only Brompton owner round here...
However I have to admit to being a fully paid up member of the middle class - if you cut me in half, you'd probably find "middle class" stamped right through the middle, like a stick of rock. ;-)

On the original topic of the thread, I will reply to the poll once I have consulted with Himself and found out what else I might be doing next weekend.

The Wally Dug has a very disappointing beer selection - only Greene King IPA (but two keg taps for it) if you didn't want lager or Guinness.

The Cumberland has a far broader selection plus a number of areas which can be claimed by groups, but I know Drummond Place's cobbles are unpopular.

Oi, I resemble both those remarks!

The Antiquary bar would sound middle class, actually no that would just sound too silly.

That is in St Stephen's Street..

Speaking of unusual pubs names an ex-colleague of mine once thought that the 'Dog Aid Society (of Scotland)' premises on Blackford Road was a pub called the 'Dog and Society'. He once suggested a drink there on the way home from work until I pointed out an obvious flaw in his plan. If I owned a pub I think that would be a choice name.

Excellent, thank you. I'm still unsure as to the status of 'Lismore Rugby Club' on the Pleasance. Is it a pub or an actual rugby club disguised as a pub?

For a long time my imaginary pub was called the Crippled Whippet, and my fancy-pants restaurant was going to be called Au cafard comblé.

For good beer, I thought I'd mention the Cask and Barrel (either one but I'm thinking here more of the South Side). Really excellent beers. Terrible tv proliferation designed to kill social interaction, but they are sometimes off and there's usually plenty of space.

It was the latter. They've moved up towards Cameron Toll now. My Brother-in-Law plays for them.

Other oddly named pubs include what was "The Right Wing" (Willwobrae I think?), but with a football, not a political theme or the "Black Bitch" in Linlithgow.

The Cumberland Bar is the regular haunt of my Mountaineering Club so I'd prefer to go somewhere else (i.e. somewhere where I don't have to cycle up a massive hill while drunk...)

The Right Wing has, thankfully, now been re-named the Radical Road. Nice touch.

I always thought the Loch Inn, off Lochend Park, was a clever pun of a name. Horrible pub, clever name...

@kaputnik - The Black Bitch takes its name from the eponymous canine on Linlithgow's coat of arms. Nice pub.

As a student in Glasgow back in the 90's I used to frequent a bar called 'The Rubiayat'. One wonders how Omar Khayyam might have felt about a watering hole being associated with his fine writing.

'Whistler's Mother' was another unusually named bar I occasionally frequented (drink was dearer there...).

Am a regular (but not frequent) at the Black Bitch. Small and unchanging selection (T, Guinness, Belhaven Best and Green King IPA) but a comfortable resting spot on a Friday evening. Pretty good prices too.

I've not seen anyone mention the Malt & Hops... I know, we're trying to narrow the scope of the discussion not widen it...

Just to remind everyone that PY Oct is the 31st, which might seem like a good reason for this to be on the 30th.

    But probably isn't...

Yes, I remember nights in the Ruby often ended with us going for a ruby.

It's turning into a Chic Murray sketch.

I am a supporter of this excellent suggestion from comrade Uberuce. Will await while the committee investigates the various options.

We do have the Argyle Arms close by with a large subterranean drinking den of course...

This would help confer a suitable air of secrecy about the forum. Also serves food.

Golden Rule might help to move it out of centre more. So many pubs!

2-3 Real/Craft beers usually, plus Williams Bros beers by the bottle.

I would call it my local now that the Earl has gone all Yoof and Tennents Lager-ey

Ages since I've been in thre Argyle Arms. Quite fancy it. Not best for those commuting to the Kingdom of Fife, mind?
