Argyle arms isn't a bad shout actually, and I would consider myself upper middle class ;)

I'll add my tuppence to the Argyle Arms, yups.

Okay. That's place sorted. At the moment Saturday the 1st at 8pm is ahead, but only by a whisker. So would be good if all remaining attendees could express a preference.

AA/1/11/14/2000, or Argyle Arms at eight o'clock in the evening of Saturday the 1st of November for short.

Aaaand, I fail at calenders. Can't do the 1st, the Friday is still fine, which nudges it into the Doodle lead.

Am I too late to suggest The Mamil's Rest, The Croc and Cronut and The Scalding Tisane?
I can manage any time so not much point in voting.

There is a coffee machine in the big Scotmid in Balerno. There is no Costa coffe. There is a nice but oddly expensive cafe in the St Joseph's centre. Kapps recalls correctly that coffee bars have failed as coffee mornings are rampant in ladies who jog households etc. The post office now has a bistro. I fear this will not last. The grey horse has a chinese restaurant. The grey horse is a nice wee pub. The middle class pub - Johnsburn Inn is now a private residence as it used to be for a certain ADam Fergusson of the building named after him at ed uni.
Some Balerno-ites will go to juni green for a night out.
If it was the summer there would be sense in cycling then drinking in grey horse nice beer garden. In winter, has wee fire in the public bar which I recommend but the lounge is less good. All small And convivial. I will put cycling Mollie up in spare room if we go for it. You will be underwhelmed.
Argyle fine by me. I lived next door to it and once guessed the super scot who is it question in the pub quiz At the the six point Born in 1835 clue

Similarly yet opposite to Cyclingmollie, alas I cannot make any of the times so no point me participating in the the doodle... I hope it's an enjoyable anniversary

I don't think I've been in the Argyle Bar for 18 years. I'm pretty sure you couldn't see in the windows back then. Or drink decent beer.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Is this an open invite? Mrs Stickman and I have no plans for that night....
Posted 10 years ago # -
"Mrs Stickman and I have no plans for that night...."
Anything that improves the gender balance.

As a proud "1,484 of 1,879" Strava accomplisher, I'd be happy to attend such an auspicious event. If we can finalise the day then I'll do what I can to attend!

Voted.
In the interests of keeping the gender balance unbalanced ;-), I've invited Boyfriend Of Fimm along.Posted 10 years ago # -
"I've invited Boyfriend Of Fimm along"
Well he's already been on CCE quite a lot...

Aye, Stickman(s), the Sesehfappum is open to all. No matter what you ride, as long as you do, and if you don't that's fine too.
Posted 10 years ago # -
"if you don't that's fine too"
Ooh that's inclusive!
Posted 10 years ago # -
I'd like to come. Argyle Arms fine by me.
Posted 10 years ago # -
I'm up for the Argyle too

Argyle Bar was taken over by the owners of Brass Monkey about 2 years ago and they've cleaned the place up a bit, got some better beers in etc. They also make more of an effort to use the basement bar which is about 3 times as big as the upstairs one.
I never really clicked with the Earl of Marchmont in all the years I lived round the corner from it.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Argyle always felt more like a pub to the Earl's slightly colder bar atmosphere.
Downstairs at the Argyle used to be popular with students, especially on quiz night.

Aye, that's what I remember too. Haven't been in the Argyle for over twenty years. Can't say I fancy it much.
Was in the Traverse Bar last night for the post-branch meeting Edinburgh Greens social. Now that's middle class.
Unburdened with children that weekend, but this being such an unusual occurrence, Mrs crowriver and I will probably try to go out somewhere a bit more 'special' than the Argyle.
Probably try and do another PY sometime, as long as it's not on a Friday... ;-)
Posted 10 years ago # -
@crowriver
I doubt anywhere in Edinburgh will be more 'special' than the Argyle that night. It would be a pleasure to meet you both.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Depends on what the version of 'special' is I suppose!
I can't really see Mrs. crowriver being thrilled at the prospect of going for a drink (she's virtually teetotal) with a group of cyclists, however friendly, nice, polite etc. (she does cycle, but does not consider herself a cyclist).
Posted 10 years ago # -
"does not consider herself a cyclist"
'We' are not cyclists.
Just people who ride bicycles to various degrees of excess.
(and wish everyone else did too .)
Posted 10 years ago # -
"I'm special"
Posted 10 years ago # -
Is the 1st fixed or is there still a possibility of the 31st winning? I may be let out for good behaviour...
