Both sides of the road nearer Juni green. You need no cars and you need to go fast for them to work as they only come on if the speed is such that they ask you to slow down. I think 20mph but do not quote me

Some signs in Fife show sub 20mph, mildly heroic to manage 17mph along Kirkcaldy Esplanade into light headwind.....

Will try again this morning with wind behind but think the 30 plus speeds are cars in front etc

That's odd, the speed sign recently disappeared from Leith Links. Did someone move it to Currie?

I think these are being rotated around the area. They were in Riccarton Mains Road, triggered at 20mph, vanished for a while and have now re-appeared in Lanark Road, triggered at 30mph. If anyone's managing 30pmh on Lanark Road into the wind, I salute them.

Ah, but downhill, with a tailwind....
    Where are these signs exactly?

One's near the junction with Bryce Road - measuring speeds of traffic going west. Not sure about the other.

If you manage 30mph, stop immediately at the Corner Cafe to reward yourself with cake.

I do like those signs - means I can employ the evidenced-based shake of the head as the cars clearly break the limit

The one at Carrick Knowe had kids running at them trying to measure their sprint speed. Took me a minute to work out what they were doing.

I think those signs are at least as effective at reducing thoughtless speeding, where the speed has drifted up, as proper speed cameras.

Boyfriend and I found one in Austria that we could activate by sprinting. We then spent a while trying to get a photo (who said you had to grow up?). Boyfriend then remarked that he thought some drivers thought we were measuring speeds or taking photos of speeders! (This was a 30km/h i.e. approximately 20mph limit, absolutely standard through the villages there.)

There are two. One as described just east of Bryce Road when heading east, and one west of Bryce Road close to the Gibson Craig. I (cough) tested out the Gibby one. Standing start from Curriehill Primary, having to take avoiding action due to a red van reversing out at the shops (who then blasted his horn at me because, apparently, he had right of way), hitting 29mph (which then dropped to 28mph for whoever was behind me). It's like the new Strava. Much fun.

I am afraid I can beat that.

Speed was 31, then 27 , then 30 then most definitely when no other vehicles were involved, 34 slow down.

However no way I was going at that speed, the machine is faulty

    Excellent. Something to aim for!

These signs aren't always accurate. The weirdest example I've seen had accidentally been set to show the speed of vehicles heading away from the sign, which was confusing for those heading towards it at same time.

To avoid motorists trying to get very high readings they usually have a cut-off eg no reading higher than 45 in a 30 limit. Variously known as Speed Indicating Device (SID), Driver Feedback Sign, Speed Activated Sign, Vehicle Activated Sign, all being subsets of Variable Message Signs.

I did look out for them, but didn't spot them. That's on my "long commute" route, though, so I guess I will find them at some point.
I need more of a hill than that to hit 30mph, though...

Fimm, start looking once you leave juni green. The other day there was a female in racing Lycra top to toe heading west. I had on my fabulous Torm green long sleeved top with white and red stripes on arms, I am surprised kaputnik hasn't mentioned as he spotted me in it yesterday, can wear two days in row as has some merino in the sport wool.

I wondered if it was you, but not enough to add it to the spotted thread

This morning into head wind I was given 27mph which is approx 12 mph faster than I was going. So they are generous signs.

Ah ha! That'll have been a car behind you, surely? Which calls into question your 34mph claim?!? Video evidence required! ;)

"Female in racing lycra" - not likely to be me as yesterday I was in my Ron Hills (over shorts) and grey coat from Aldi (is a good coat for the money). Also I now have my splendid tartan pannier which I think you would have noticed. I start out about 7am - always see a good number cycling down the hill even at that time.
