Can anyone confirm that I can get to the Telford rd entrance of the western general from craigleith hill crescent?

Satellite Map on iPad suggests there's a path.

Very old spokes map shows a path to Telford rd.

Google streetview and Open Cycle Map suggest you can. It's a cul de sac street, but at the end there's a fence with an opening in which there's a small, short path at the end that leads direct to Telford Road entrance to the W.G.

Yes, you can pop through the gap Kappers describes no problem. There is a gate which may be closed but you can just push it open.

Thanks k'nik, and min. Was in a dreadful rush this morning. Made it though. You're right about the path - totally unsign posted at the turn though.

Now sitting in car park 9 waiting for a scan.

is the western gen signposted at all on the NEPN? I always turn off at the Craigleith shops, and there's none on that side. but wondered about the next exit?

I don't think it is, as far as I can remember. One of the regulars will know.

Really is time 'cycle access' to/from WGH was improved -

Of course NHS has health and safety concerns...

The same concerns don't stop their staff (I assume) from parking on the pavement in copious numbers up and down Telford Road.

They do provide several areas of bike parking but this particular one brought a smile to our faces when we spotted it today:

What is the bike storage like at the Western? I'm about to start a rotation there and really don't want to get the bus. Hopefully it is a bit better than the Royal as I can never seem to find a space.

"I'm about to start a rotation there"

    Presumably that means work?

    Staff?

There certainly is bike parking and a surprising amount of car parking!

Think you should contact(?) and see what happens - and report back of course!

Do you know about the (unsigned) route from the NEPN to the back entrance?

The Ps are all bike parking.

Husband replies: it's no better than the Royal. Usually spaces, but fragmented, and not all spaces are covered. Need to speak to Security to get the access code for the locked cages.

I've been at the WG a fair bit this year (but not everyday for work). Haven't had any trouble getting parking, but not covered or secure.

I was at the portefield rd access on Wednesday and it was much better than earlier in the year - in particular no taxi queue blocking the cycle path.

@acsimpson Don't often go up Telford Road, but did today and noticed lots of large yellow 'no footway parking' signs both sides of the WGH entrance. Not sure if these are new?

Anyway, towaway scheme in operation apparently. Didn't seem to be stopping folk parking there.

I didn't notice them yesterday but perhaps they were obscured by vehicles.

Streetview suggests they weren't there in June. It also shows that the number of otherwise law abiding law breakers has been steadily increasing for a number of years.

Pretty unmissable, I'd say. Lots of pretty massive signs all placed high up on lamposts. Probably means they're new then... just need to see how it pans out.

Chdot: Not there as staff but as a dirty tax dodging student capacity.

I'll struggle to get security to let me into the covered bike area as I'm "technically" not staff. Hopefully they'll be spaces at the crack of dawn.

"I'll struggle to get security to let me into the covered bike area as I'm "technically" not staff."

    Paid though?

Would hope that NHS would like to take some sort of responsibility for you - and your travel choice...

If security people don't fancy doing something they are not explicitly authorised to do, I'd take it elsewhere.

Is it 'simpler' to apply for a parking space??

I'm a student nurse, so not paid (but grant supported) but not quite "staff" enough for benefits.

Its super complicated, for instance my flatmates can use the NHS shuttle bus (being final year medical students) but I can't! Getting security passes have been an issue before because I'll only be on the ward for 8-10 weeks. If there is parking ourside, I'll just risk the bike with the rest of the folks.

The upside is that I'm usually fed enough chocolate biscuits over a 13hr shift that i've got no excuse not to try and set some KOM's on the way home :D

There is some path work underway adjacent to the Craigleith Hill Crescent entrance. The gate has gone and the entrance is now double width. Paths in the hospital grounds look much wider, but not totally clear yet as to where they are going to go.

Also, the Groathill Avenue to Craigleith Hill Avenue cut through now has dropped kerbs.

I think that's new, but correct me if I'm wrong.

There are two dropped sections (one for each direction) with some tactiles on the pavement (but none on the actual cut through)

Not new, but they are more obvious, previously it had been a very half hearted attempt at a dropped kerb. Even more important, that section of Groathill Avenue is now double yellow lined. That really is something to cheer. Hurrah!

I don't know what they are doing! Last week the paths on hospital grounds (beyond the red signs on the above pictures) were finished and the path open, then this week, they reopened the ground completely and destroyed the path they had just laid down a few days before!
