In view of the other two threads -

Any thoughts on change of day/venue?

    Or just PY on 28th?

We moan about PY, indeed yesterday I was asked whether I wanted a wet coffee or a dry coffee. I went for the former.

It does open earlier than most?

If we keep,up all this socialising we should look to forming as a group to put in a bid for running the cycling infrastructure in Edinburgh, we have all the experts.

I had to know - and Google told all. Wet coffees have milk as liquid, dry coffees have milk as foam. Presumably there's a "perfect" like cocktail-making or is that only for next-level baristas? Coffee with wet-n-dry doesn't sound so appealing.

Gembo, I am off to PY after dropping the boy off at tennis courts.

If anyone asks if I want a wet or dry beverage, I may have to conclude that uber hipster-ism has reached a zenith.

Was hipster boy with short back and sides. New. He also omitted my wee chocolate on the side which I demanded pompously

Do they not serve black coffee then?

Is that actually an actual thing?

It sounds like the sort of stuff people get uptight about in London. No need to bring it here. Down with that sort of thing.

When I ask for a black coffee at work, I nearly always get asked if I want milk in it.

    Mind boggles.

Kaputnik: when you order an "americano", you're typically handed an "americana". The mind boggles.

Given that they can't even differentiate between a latte and a cappuccino, my workplace's coffee shop is most definitely never going to be seriously troubling PY for command of the hipster-ism zenith.

I ordered a machiatto in Nom de Plume the other day and got something quite close to a cappuccino. The depths of my disappointment duly revealed my prejudice that I expect people in Broughton Street to be general sophisticates.

Listen to us all, the commodity fetishism of coffee for sure.

Is it true that in Paris if you order cafe au lait after 11am then you are a tourist?

Annie Lennox quite good on Strictly last night with I PUt A Spell On You. Nina Simone better version.

Up thread nice to see John Lydon getting an outing (PiL are the most under rated over rated band). John has adopted his step daughter Ari Up's children and says they need boundaries.

    @gembo

If you order a café au lait at all you are a tourist. 'Un crème' is the formula to unlock the knowing nod of properly disguised disdain.

I've heard the 11 o'clock rule for cappuccino in Italy.

My brother has PiL's album in a tin somewhere. I never got them.

If I'm in Paris, I am a tourist. Even when I order "un café". ;-)

Café au lait is your traditional domestic bowl of coffee and hot milk, isn't it?

Would we expect French tourists to enter an Edinburgh café and try ordering, in their best Scottish brogue, "Haw, gonnaegeizza cuppa - four-sugars-n-that, ken?"

Let's all try that in Peter's Yard and see what we get.

yes to sum up the milk in coffee rules of french and italians

the breakfast rule allows for milk. After that black?

Did I ever mention Victor? He was a chap who frequented the cafe society of Glasgow's West End in the 1980s and 1990s.

In the UB Chip Bar (i used to hang out there on saturday mornings as I knew the barman and he gave you free coffee if you brought him cakes). Victor would come in for a coffee every week and the barman would give him a black coffee. Victor would then demand cream. (same ballet every week). He would then turn the coffee spoon to the convex side and pour an entire jug of cream into the coffee and indeed over the rim of the cup and into the saucer. He would then drink the coffee and cream from the saucer and then the cup. Lovely.

I mostly get blank looks in PY.

Now there's a memory. Not only of the spoon-cream trick but also the guilt-free cream trip.

My OH used to love a "lagrima". But now she prefers tea like a proper Brit/Scot/etc

Reminds me of the Police Exchange Chewin' the Fat sketch, with the Glasgow bobby in New York.

I've never come across folk offering milk with a black coffee before although in Switzerland I've often had strange looks when ordering white tea (for my wife). Particularly if you translate it to weißer Tee you only get blank looks. After all they only serve black tea (with or without milk).

    No contest then(?)

    Friday 28th.

    Statutory reminder -

    For newcomers (ALL welcome) -

    AKA http://tinyurl.com/PY-Fri
