I was browsing through some documents on the Spokes website, as one does when home alone on a Saturday night, and came across the 2013 plan for improvements to the family network. The route from the meadows to princes street is marked as being due for an upgrade in the short term (2014).

Does anyone know what the plans are here? Have we already had the upgrade? It doesn't seem very family friendly to me, so I'm hoping that the improvements haven't already taken place...

Biggest change has been to re-allocate bike lane on the Mound from parking to their supposed function. Some red chip lane stuff and new section on Market Street.
Hotel Missoni re-instatement of bike lane but still too narrow. (Took 2 years to get that put back).
Real challenge is to re-work the Bristo Place / Forrest Road road layout to allow a safe link to MMW.
Road layout with cycle lane in centre of road is non-starter for family and general bike use.

I think that while Forrest Road isnt ideal for families (although why not go along the left and then cross at the lights) I think the steepness of the Mound or Market St is more likely to be an issue.

I think most people could cope with the steepness if they weren't in conflict with traffic at the same time...

Okay thanks, a bit sad to see the improvement has already happened, although if there used to be car parking on the mound then I guess this is a big improvement.

Really hope Forrest road will get sorted soon... But at the same time I hope the council don't regard this as the only route south from Princes street that cyclists need, it would be great to have an option that was a bit flatter.

@SRD I'm very impressed with your family cycling!
