The incident on the Royal Mile this evening is not an armed incident, and there is no risk to the public."

Apparently it was to do with a stolen motorbike?? Seems like a lot of trouble to go to!

^ you wouldn't be saying that if it was your bike that had been nicked! I would say it was an excellent police response :)

I'd be mortified! I am sure there must be more to it than that.

Helicopter was up from 8 till 11. Could be seen with spotlight on roofs of building or maybe closes between. Not sure how that ties in with story given.
Was going to post last night to see if anyone knew more.Posted 10 years ago # -
I was hoping you would know more!
Maybe it was Fred Goodwin's motorbike?

Bizarre incident - someone making get-away on roof tops?

On a motorbike? Very James Bond!

Naked.
bow_bar: Apparently a naked man with a gun on Cockburn St, the area is closed off so please avoid
instography: @bow_bar Naked Gun? Some mistake, surely?
bow-bar @instography No, there really is a nude male with a firearm. And don't call me Shirley
instography: @bow_bar Let's hope he's firing blanks.

Anyone else noticed a huge increase in police helicopters flying over Edinburgh since the creation of Police Scotland? It's at least once a month now. Previously it was very rare, unless the royals were at Holyrood but even then not every time.
OTOH, when I worked in Glasgow choppers with spotlight going were very commonplace sight over the centre.
Tougher approach to 'saunas'; Routine arming of police; Choppers buzzing over city regularly; Definitely a 'Weegiefying' of policing in Edinburgh going on.
Not sure I like it.

Either police were expecting a group of trouble makers or may be the riot shields were to be used against the public trying to get away from an incident I guess or may just be to look more menacing to make it easier to close the street.

@crowriver IIRC L&B didnt have a chopper of their own, Strathclyde's is now available to Police Scotland

what @mgj said ^

@mgj, I'm sure you're right. Doesn't mean they have to use it (them) constantly, though, does it? OTOH maybe they 'need' to use it (them) to spend (and therefore justify) the budget for the chopper(s)? Must cost a fortune for each hover.

"Officers investigating a motorbike theft were called to reports that the suspect was on a roof in Cockburn Street at about 22:00 BST."

I would agree that 50 officers, many in riot gear, a sniffer dog and a police helicopter seems excessive to apprehend one motorcycle thief... Must have been a very wanted / notorious offender.

I recall when I was wee there was rooftop chase in central Edinburgh for a "smash'n'grab" jewel thief. No riot gear, no chopper, presumably no sniffer dog either. Probably a fair few bobbies though. The guy got caught though. Turned out he was a nearby neighbour!

Riot police would not be most suitable for catching one person unless it just so happen riot police was what was available then would imagine more to it than a motorcycle thief.

“The use of the police helicopter and a small number of officers with shields was simply about ensuring a safe and co-ordinated apprehension of the suspects. There were clear risks and challenges due to the height and size of the building and our response aimed to manage the risks and to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
“Earlier in the evening, the males riding the motorcycle potentially placed themselves and the public in danger and we are pleased that the motorcycle was recovered and one man detained. A positive line of enquiry is being followed as we continue to trace the other suspect.”
