I doubt it. It would inconvenience him and the cyclist shouldn't have been in his way.

(Please please please let me be proved wrong..)

I would have thought that this drivers' actions were sufficiently different from "things most drivers do every day," that he should get a stiff sentence.

You'll never get judges handing down serious sentences for things most divers do every day, like drive into a low sun, overtake on narrow windy roads or be distracted by phones/ maps/ children etc. However, it appears that this guy was up for a fight and struck the cyclist after having a row.

The tone of the CTC piece is admirably measured, pointing out that everyone loses from stupid actions like this driver's. The positive thing is that the jury was not swayed by the helmet or primary position red herrings.

I like the observation in the first of the Comments that a vehicle is a dangerous weapon.

When I started learning to drive, my Father told me that I was training to handle probably the most dangerous weapon I would ever receive a licence for. I have always remembered that - it was a l-o-o-ng time ago ;) - and try to drive accordingly.

Would that the legal system would see things that way too !
