I was googling dickie Davies to see if he was still alive and whether any operation yew tree Intel on former world of sport supremo. On a link to mal King Kong Kirk who was the wrestler killed by big daddy doing his splash down on top of him there was a connection to an observer 2004 top ten weirdest sporting deaths. Aside from the bizarre Payne Stewart aeroplane tragedy there was also the suggestion that it was not malaria that finished off fausto coppi but a herbal concoction known only to locals in upper volta

Might have had a weakened body from too many hot shots. Back in his day speed was pretty universally used by pro and amateurs.

@nelly -yes, you see pictures of him sitting with his feet down the cludgie and he has the bug eyed look of the all night raver. Great farmer's tan also.

Some suggestion they did not bother with mosquito nets on their hunting trips to the Upper Volta.

So there is a plausible malaria story there - I had thought it was a bit like George Bests non-appearance one saturday citing the flu when he was with Hibs (a tad past his peak....)?

There was a very funny cartoon in the evening news the following week with george tucked up in bed drinking lemsip - caption said something like "well, it makes a change from a hangover....."

Malaria (bad air) not eradicated from Italy until sometime after Ww2 ? So chronic infection not impossible?

His illness was misdiagnosed when he returned to Italy according to William Fotheringham in Fallen Angel.
