Am sure it isn't but is there a new cycle path running behind the tram terminus at Gogar? I saw 2 cyclists heading west this morning but wasn't sure if they were just cycling along a pavement to a tram stop

Will investigate next time I pass by, but I suspect it was just tram drivers going to work.

Depends on what you mean by 'behind'. There is a sort of path around the perimeter.

Streetview shows it. It looks like it just goes to the gate of the depot.

Pretty sure it is possible to follow a rough path up and around from the gate.

Saw it on the map when I was thee and trying to get to the bridge to get home. But wasn't encouraged by folk there to try it. Went back out to the road instead.

Really should have written the blogpost about how appalling the cycle infra is out there.

It is possible to go from the road into the tram depot (Myreton Drive) on a rough track around the end of the airport, over the railway, and connect up with Turnhouse Road near Meadowfeild Farm [OSM map: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=55.9426&mlon=-3.3263#map=16/55.9426/-3.3263&layers=N

You haven't got that much free time...

I once saw a running club continuing round the back of the depot - past the gate and onto Gogar Castle Road - must have been a cross country running club as not an obvious route.

The depot itself has a couple of bike shelters, so I assume a few must cycle there.

Can't say I recommend the track drnoble highlights unless you have a mountain bike and a sense of adventure! It used to be better before the tram depot was built but isn't really useable anymore.

Maybe a Right of Way then(?)

It used to be much better - I've driven a Ford Escort along that route, but that was quite a long time ago.

Yes there is an old right of way that was formalised enough to have at one point two bridges over the railway in close proximity, to the farmstead known as Meadowfield on the north of the railway. One of the railway bridges remains, and you can follow a rough emergency services access track along the airport perimeter fence and pick up the old road, which is pretty cracked up, but navigable on bike. The farmer has blocked the road in one direction at the farm by dumping waste on it, but you can get around the other way and connect onto the Turnhouse Road.

Cheers for the responses everyone, am sadden that I was right and that it isn't a nice new path connecting the park and ride to the Gogar roundabout shared path.

Thread resurrection! Does anyone know if that track from Myreton Drive up to the farm/Turnhouse Road is still open? If so is it passable on a hybrid? I spotted it on a map but have no idea if it's viable or not.

    This bit of track? https://www.strava.com/segments/3756556?filter=overall

Yes, open as of a few weeks ago. Dry but bumpy. Probably fine with care on a hybrid, my CdF did fine over it.

I was very pleased to discover it, it's a handy link for longer rides.

The very one! Thanks. Even if I've to walk bits, I don't mind.

As jonty says it is very definitely open. I regularly ride it on a Helios with passenger and stoker.

It does occasionally get fly tippers and might have broken glass/ceramic tiles on occasion though so watch out.

The bumps on the track fill up after rain so best ridden after a day or two of dry.

Excellent. I look forward to exploring it.

Did it this evening. Perfectly navigable but I regretted having this morning set my tyres to 110psi.

Currently blocked by heras fencing on the Turnhouse Rd side. From the looks of it yo avoid (more) flytipping

Fencing still up but bypassable fairly easily via well-trodden path on the adjacent field boundary. Went on a nice cycle out this way on Saturday and passed a man who was foraging alongside the path for brambles. His tentative greeting seemed to suggest he might have briefly thought I was the Bramble Police.

Crop should be good this year @gembo. I shall make both jeely and crème de mûres. Maybe we could get a bottle of crémant de Bourgogne, put our helmets on and have kir royale?

Sounds good, I must return your Beowulf. I do always wear my helmet when drinking kid royale as very easy to bump heads

Saw some curious looking black blackberries recently. Almost like black currants. Spent.

Checked my stash which are up high in the pentlands last Sunday and they were green.

Looking good in the southside. Half ripe already, fat and juicy.
