Another potential threat to the fields at Midmar in the Hermitage.

"We believe that there is an opportunity, through consultation with the Community and the Council to secure development incorporating enhanced public access to the countryside, recreation opportunities, and enhanced allotment provision within established boundaries in a sustainable location. We believe this site could provide an element of diversity to the land supply, and an opportunity for higher value, bespoke properties with potential self-build opportunities to be delivered within a highly prestigious area of the City."

Oh that rare bit of open land next to Blackford Hill.

How about an iconic hunting tower/CCE clubhouse and cafe?

development incorporating enhanced public access to the countryside

Enhanced? How does building on green space and corralling walkers through like-it-or-lump-it tarmacked paths count as 'enhanced'?

an opportunity for higher value, bespoke properties

Like the ultra-modern house with three garages that's already been built on the boundary?

Once upon a time that sort of land would've been bought by the Corporation and set aside in perpetuity for recreation only. Unless it's being sold by CEC, that in which case would be unforgiveable.

According to the schedule, this is a one-bedroom field.

So, this site is designated as:

    Green Belt
    Area of Great Landscape Value
    Open Space
    Local nature conservation site

It couldn't possibly be built on, could it...

@morningsider, quite poetic in above post and yet not quite a haiku?

I'm a bit worried about @gembo's adoption of the interrogative inflection?

    Come on now.

Every fule know that there's a pressing requirement for "higher value, bespoke properties with potential self-build opportunities". I mean, what else are all those finance executives and leisure entrepreneurs supposed to do with their bags of cash?

And it's not as if there are large properties for sale and lying empty in Barnton or anywhere like that, oh no.

There is no plan to build on the field as yet, but the land has been marketed by estate agent Strutt & Parker as having “development potential” so it should be no surprise there has been a fair bit of interest.

A number of offers have been received, which would suggest that someone is going to pay top dollar. Two protest launches are set to take place at the car park, a Labour one tomorrow with MP Ian Murray and Councillor Paul Godzik and a Green one next week with MSP Alison Johnstone and Councillor Melanie Main.

Few locals know who owns the land, but thanks to website Land Matters, run by Green land reform campaigner Andy Wightman, the complexities of many ownership transfers lodged with the Land Registry have been laid bare to reveal the land has effectively been in the same family since 1923.

The family is the Laings, descendants of Sir Alexander Grant, the managing director of McVitie’s Biscuits who died in 1937. One of his descendants is Jamie Laing, the millionaire clothing entrepreneur and star of Made in Chelsea.

Unlike the Craighouse site nearby, there is no question this land is in the green belt and if there was any hint of building going ahead the same forces which opposed Craighouse and Raeburn Place would be marshalled against it.

Alas not even these forces can contend with the rubber stamps in the planning department.

And this is not the first time they have attempted to sell it.

How odd - "the protesters might have a point". Anyone fancy taking a guess where John Mclellan walks his dog?

Not sure this makes the case though!

Goff Cantley, who is spearheading the Save Midmar
Paddock campaign, said: “More than 100 people use this site every day which makes it one of the most popular visitor attractions in Edinburgh.
