bike broken front derailleur bent, crank-set bent

    The front crankset has bent on bike 1st gear wheel is so bent the chains comes off, the 2nd and 3rd make a noise like an electric motor clattering as bent.

    The front derailleur is out of position and bend, the end hits the back wheel if select first.

    I cycled up to morningside starbucks today the gears were working perfectly no noise. When I got back on my bike I notice lots of noises, then when changed to 1st the chain came off, put it back on and came of 3 more times when selected 1st.

    I left my bike unattended for 20 minutes it may be someone banged in to it but was well of the road by the tables and chairs outside Starbucks chained to railings. Not sure if got banged or just wore out or something.

    I was wondering what sort of job this would be to fix, also where would be place that could fix this quickly. As would ideally want fixed before the following weekend.

    Try the Bicycle Works on Argyle Place - they're normally good at diagnosing and fixing stuff.

    I wonder if the rear dropout has been bent - perhaps as you say if someone knocked into it. Bent front crankset is very strange…. I agree with the two shops mentioned; also the Bike Station has the tool you can borrow which you screw into your rear dropout allowing it to be rejigged to the correct position. Certainly worth checking that before checking bends in the derailleur itself in my opinion. You only get so many chances at bending it back to the right place though depending on what material it is…

    I hope you get it fixed.

    EDIT: sorry just read you said front derailleur - ignore me. Is it a clamp on front derailleur?

    difficult to diagnose without a picture - I have managed to rebend bent teeth on a chain ring before to straight (only so many times you can do it). I think have a braze on derailleur I could have offered but no extra clamp thingy - just wondering if the derailleur had rotated or shifted a bit...

    If it's definitely (and non-re-bend-ably) bent rather than just swivelled around then the Bike Station has a drawer which is usually full of reasonably usable front mechs, if you can find a triple-compatible example of the correct clamp size and "pull"/cable approach direction.

    As algo says it's hard to diagnose without seeing but I would guess the derailleur is out of alignment, especially if it's hitting the rear wheel.

    The teeth on chainrings often aren't perfectly straight to assist gear changes. So unless you know what it looked like beforehand it's often hard to say what it should look like now.

    The derailleur is quite far out of alignment. The smallest front chain ring is quite bent out shape, but the other 2 chainrings may work well enough when the derailleur is realigned.

    I order the new front derailleur front Evans yesterday, I need to order a new small gear as well as too bent out of shape, I need to take it in so they know what size of gear it is. I will get the old derailleur out of the way or try and bend it so it works a bit and put the chain in top gear so can take my bike in and show them the size.

    I woke early 4 this morning and tried getting my broken derailleur to work after watching a video on U tube. It seems impossible to get derailleur not to foul think its too out of shape. I will take front derailleur off, will take my bike to a shop will try bicycle works.

    @Ed1 probably not a bad decision - I wouldn't trust Evans to fix it and/or not mess you around / rip you off / get it wrong the first 5 times.

    Yes evans would most Likely take a long time I bought it 5 months ago from evans think has been good for the money the first major malfunction but don't think evans would be a good place for repairs as like a car dealer be slow and expensive i guess. bicycle works said will have it fixed for Thursday it may need new cranks if cant be bent back to shape so may need parts ordered or would have been even quicker.

    That's some clatter it's had. I've seen a bike lying on the ground get stood on accidentally. What would bend a crank on a bike chained to a railing?

    That is my bike back from bicycle works they managed to bend the small crank back in to shape only cost 16 pound is riding perfectly very good service, quick and cheap.

    I am not sure what bent it may be was banged in to or something when I was parked outside Starbucks ,the deraliour was at wrong angle and noticed the gear was broken when got to George steet.
