Could be, they seemed to have no variation just. Small smooth disk but was small and far away. No clue how he got his foot out but he did

Like the one on the left but looked smoother from behind like the lid from the milk bottle but black.

They do come in black as well. The one on the right is showing the pedal sitting in the cleat. With speedplays, the pedal itself is simple, the cleat has all the moving parts.

So you have to have an enormous mechanical lump attached to the bottom of each shoe, which you presumably can't walk anywhere on in case you get mud or stones in the moving parts?

Yes. I only use mine on bikes where I am not planning on walking anywhere, although they do come with 'cafe covers' so they aren't really any worse than most road cleats. Then again I always use mtb spds for my day to day cycling.
