There is a white car at 3:25 turning left from princes st to Frederick st that doesn't look like it should be there at all

How many near pedestrian accidents on the Princes Street / Frederick Street Junction in Edinburgh per hour?

The original video was taken to see how long pedestrians had to wait before they could cross the junction. Times varied from 90 seconds to 4 minutes 30 seconds. I hadn't realised how many near accidents there were at this junction till I checked the footage.

From the hour long footage I extracted 42 separate clips of pedestrians crossing with live traffic heading towards them. I'm amazed nobody had been killed at this junction so far.

Pedestrians only have a green light for 8 seconds.

Before the trams were introduced this junction had been closed for a number of years. Pedestrians had free flow from the mound all the way to Charlotte Square.

    Recorded Monday 22nd December 2014 between 3:30pm and 4:30pm

Not Princes Street but I always meant to try timing the various crossing options at Elm Row/Annandale St.

One issue with the new tram related junctions is there's no lights on the "other side" of the junction. As a pedestrian waiting to cross the junctions I can't see what the state of the lights is. I can't time my crossing say at the end of a phase when there's no traffic.

Crossing the top of Annandale St is relatively easy as you can see the lights on the opposite side and decide when to cross.

On the grand scheme of Edinburgh’s traffic problems, this is perhaps not top of the priority list

    'Bout says it all really.

Cos cars & buses are more important aren't they?

New video showing how long it takes a pedestrian to cross York Place

    http://youtu.be/LQlE-X7zmss

How long does it take for a pedestrian to cross York Place in Edinburgh when obeying all traffic signals?

Recorded at the junction of York Place and Elder Street, just outside the St James shopping center.

At the end of the video a cyclists cycles across the pavement almost hitting me, and a 4x4 driving through a green man.

No trams are involved in delaying this crossing.

From pressing the crossing button it took 2 minutes 35 seconds to cross the junction.

Another good one to measure would be the crossing at Tollcross from the south side of Brougham St to the south-west side of Lady Grey St, via Leven St & W. Tollcross.

I reckon that could take up to 4 mins obeying the green man. Add in another 2 mins to cross Fountainbridge, you have a substantial chunk of your walk into town taken up waiting for cars.

New video of crossing York Place - this time interrupted by a tram passing twice.

4 Minutes 46 seconds to cross!

A man was hit by a bus yesterday at the Frederick Street junction. The stupid length of time pedestrians are expected to wait there is mentioned in the article.

  12. What a lovely, caring tweet there is on the article from someone to the EEN:

@edinburghpaper man knocked down by Lothian bus on corner of princes St & Frederick St. Expect traffic chaos.

That's right. Man knocked down, important issue is traffic 'chaos'. Perspective blown.

  13. Oh man, her follow up....

@highlandjewel @LiamRudden @edinburghpaper he was definitely still alive. But it's rather messy.

Just came out of Waverley and waited an age for the lights to change. Nice day, so didn't mind, but I can see why some are getting frustrated and taking their chances.

Why are the chipwrapper leaking the details of an internal investigation and disciplinary matter before it has been officially completed and sanctioned? If the employee in question has a half decent union rep or lawyer, they've probably completely compromised the case.

    Another one today -

    "

The incident occurred today at around 11.10am when a woman was involved in a collision with a bus.

I do hope she pulls through.

It would be more honest if the authorities using the phrase "..was involved in a collision with a..." replaced it with, "...was hit by a...".

The earlier incident on Frederick Street on August 19 prompted fresh fears about the short period of time pedestrians have to cross the busy junction. Cllr Mowat said: “We have not heard any reports coming forward about the signalling there. We have to think about what to do about that.”

Talk about burying your head in the sand from Cllr Mowat.

I wonder if she would be able to elaborate on the We in that sentence.

Back in the eighties when we used to visit Edinburgh, the flow of pedestrian traffic on Princes street used to be so high that the green man just got totally ignored: at side streets people started crossing and then just kept on crossing through the red man until it came round green again and the drivers just had to sit there. I can remember actually feeling quite sorry for the cars! Have we all got more submissive as pedestrians, or have drivers got more impatient - or is there just not the flow of people any more to enable folk to just take over the crossing like that?

I distinctly remember as a child there were different "rules" for Princes Street; pedestrian power ruled, people crossed long after the lights changed and as you say, motor traffic just had to wait.

The "new" Princes Street I have experienced has vehicles continuing to drive at people already on the road and hitting the horn instead of the brakes.

I do get the feeling that current Lothian buses routing sends a lot more vehicles making left turns onto Frederick / Hanover / St. Davids Streets than it used to, but I've no evidence for that!

Some of the light sequences are just bonkers, with everyone held on red for considerable periods; vehicles and pedestrians alike, for no good and apparent reason.

The tram was "meant" to reduce the number of buses on Princes Street. Of course it's managed to remove none at all, so it's busier than ever.

I wonder if she doesn't mean 'reports from inside council' in response to the social media, newspaper concerns?

I could be wrong, but Councillor Mowat was a reliable member of the Transport Forum and cycles as well as walks.

    @sally

    All of them!

Though 'in those days' there were cars as well as buses which (perhaps) were more inclined to give way to streams of pedestrians??

I'm not blaming bus drivers, but I suspect that there is more of a feeling that 'PT is more important'.

That is NOT an explanation/excuse/etc. for recent incidents.

But it does come back to the 'traffic flow' mindset that CEC is keen on.

Bus lanes and bus prioritisation are important - especially in relation to other motor traffic.

People on bikes have mostly benefited from this too.

Pedestrians can (particularly around Princes Street) be the losers.

Clearly there needs to be rethink on the pedestrian phases (again, no assumption that they were a factor in recent events).

'Originally' it was expected that when the trams were running there would be no/very few buses on P St.

'Originally' it was expected that there would be a ban on bikes.

There is now talk of more frequent trams. Surely time for a serious look at reducing number of buses/routes AND getting a transfer system working!!

TfL is now allowing payment by contactless card as part of the Oyster system, so...

Just seen an all-directions pedestrian green phase of at least 30 seconds on Princes Street/Frederick Street.

Random, inevitable (some time) event, but adds more 'evidence' to need for clear look at transport (and how it flows...) in city centre -

    "

A spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that there was a minor collision with one of our vehicles and another bus operator.

“The vehicles were quickly moved to allow the traffic to continue to flow and avoid any disruption.
