That'd explain the scuff mark that appeared on my bike for no apparent reason.

breaking his arm in six places and suffering a broken eye socket

*Six* places? That takes some doing. I can't imagine that arm will ever work properly again.

Oh. Didn't read the story, so I didn't know it was serious. I'll get back under my rock, sorry.

Meanwhile the commenters don't know whether to make fun of him or not, and resort to punning with U2 lyrics.

Full marks to the Guardian for not mentioning if he was wearing a plastic helmet.

Ooya! That's one of the worst set of injuries I've heard of in a while. “High-energy bicycle accident” indeed. The broken little finger will smart...

Invite him along to POP as part of his recovery? I hear he likes to get involved with good causes.

Whatever you think of him, that's not a pleasant thing to happen at all. Hope he recovers fully.

But what make of bike was it...?

Nasty set of injuries though and sure the forum wish him well. Of course it could all go very nasty if H&S factors start getting mentioned. When the word 'park' is mentioned I immediately think of small dogs running under your wheels. Central Park is nothing like the Meadows though - or is it?

BBC report says the hospital statement said he was involved in "a high-energy bicycle accident when he attempted to avoid another rider" [bloody cyclists]...

BBC also fails to note whether he was rocking a plastic hat at the time. From which I surmise that a) the NYPD don't make statements about cycling accidents; and b) the hospital has no protocol of referring to what accidentees are wearing at the time of said accidents.

I'm pretty sure that the reason the UK press reports on the hatlessness or otherwise of cyclists involved in incidents is that the police have a policy of referring to it in their incident reports and the press have a policy of printing stuff verbatim as it gets them to their word count requirement with the least amount of effort.

Cycling in Central Park is a bit of a hot topic for the locals. There are often roadies cycling around the park at high speeds. They do tend to do this on the "roads" within the park, rather than on the footpaths, but it is a cause of much angst amongst other Park users, and accidents of Bono's sort are not uncommon - although his set of injuries is quite spectacular, tbf. A lot of peds get really quite miffed at the cycling speeds from some users, and last time I was over there was some debate going on amongst who had right of way at certain junctions, with both sides just assuming they had right of way and crossing, causing accidents.

I do have to side with the peds in relation to some of the roadies - the speeds some of the guys were going at was quite extreme, probably trying to set Strava times and the like.

The main road within Central Park seems to be used as an exercise circuit. This means hundreds of bikes circulating at high speed. It is very much a road sized route and not a cycle path as such. It is more like the road around Arthur's Seat than the Meadows.

"last time I was over there was some debate going on amongst who had right of way at certain junctions"

like the junction of MMW and NMW where there are give way signs on four arms and everyone ignores them?

The Daily Mail story covering this doesn't mention helmets either, but does refer to a previous occasion when he was spotted cycling with his wife:

"The couple were both wearing helmets on that occasion, but didn't have extra safety gear life elbow or knee pads. Bono head earphones in and was listening to music as he rode."
