The SmartWater aspect certainly makes sense in terms of identifying the stolen bicycle, but it is not entirely clear how the Police are tracing it so quickly after it has been stolen each time: does the bike have a GPS tag, are they observing it and following criminals home etc?

    Well - judging by this:

"And PoliceScotland warned that the marked bike - and other marked items - will be back on the streets to hep tham catch crooks red-handed."

I'd say they've employed the specialist skills of Officer Crabtree.

@jdanielp, it leaves a trail of smart water on the road and they shine their smartwater lamp on it and follow the track?

@gembo I was wondering about that but it just seemed a bit unlikely - would be intrigued to see how well it shows up!

I'm pretty certain I nearly "stole" that bike...

There was a very poorly secured mountain bike at the back of the library and I was trying to work out if the Library Messengers would keep it safe if I left a note advising the owner to be more careful in future!

I'm now glad that I didn't get to it before the thief did...

No doubt the problem is that racks would alter the 'setting' of that A listed building!

I think the problem is simply that no-one has thought to ask for more space before. The cluttered railings and lampposts look a mess and a few stands would make the place look a whole lot more tidy. The transport office is quite amenable to requests.

Mostly SmartWater™ in this context is SmartWater Instant, which is a thin polymer liquid that you paint onto your bike or your hi-fi or your computer's RAM chips...back in the day. The PoliceScotland bike (maybe we should call it 'Operation Crabtree') probably is GPS-tagged as well, because SmartWater requires finding the property first and then investigating it with the UV lamp.

Also good for painting on overhead line equipment on railways.

Don't suppose we can replace it a form of dermal transfer cyanide?

That's good to hear. my repeated complaints about vehicles being regularly allowed to park (i.e. every day) on the pedestrianised area in front of the library have been ineffectual.
